I have gone through almost 10 similar topics on this forum and several other random searches on google.
Ok so I have an Acer TravelMate 4150 laptop (which is almost 4 years old) and about a month old Belkin N Wireless Router (http://catalog.belki...oduct_Id=459569)
The problem is that the wireless connection keeps dropping every few minutes, say about 10 minutes, but I haven't noticed a specific pattern for these disconnections. Sometimes it lasts just for 1 minute and sometimes even 30!! The wireless network symbol (a single computer) in the taskbar keeps is turned on (blue) as long as its connected to the internet and the speed shows as 54 mbps. But, since I'm always expecting it to disconnect, so I keep checking the speed often and it sometimes goes down to 24 mbps and normally when the internet stops working it shows as 1 mbps, however, mostly the signal strength shows all 5 bars, though sometimes it does go down to like 2 bars!
The router is installed in my bedroom and I normally sit in the living room (so yes, a wall does come in the way of the router and my PC, however I sometimes have the door of the room closed and sometimes open which actually doesn't really make any difference). Also, I sit at a distance from the router which is not more than 20 - 30 feet!
Just to let you know, somtimes I have several other networks showing up on my networks list, and sometimes not. But it doesn't make any difference either.
I have been facing this problem ever since I have had this router installed; and yesterday I actually also formatted my system (for a completely different reason altogether though) and re-installed Windows XP Professional Version 2002 (then upgraded to SP2). Earlier I had SP3 installed. But the situation wit the network remains the same.
I downloaded the Wireless LAN drivers (both Broadcom and Intel) from Acer's website and installed both of them. I also tried upgrading the firmware of the router but it said that I already had the latest firmware installed. The wireless adapter that came pre-installed with my laptop is the: Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection (dual-mode 802.11b/g)
I have a DSL modem (a BEETEL) that is connected to the router with a RJ45 cable; and when I connect my laptop to one of the 4 ports on the router through a RJ45 cable, the connection remains stable.
I'm using Airtel Broadband (384 kbps). Here is a link that I googled that helps to set up an Airtel Broadband connection: http://twincling.org/node/160 ; I'm giving you this link just in case if it helps you figure out the type of settings that an Airtel connection needs.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated because the frequent dropping of the wireless is highly frustrating and now it's started to get on my nerves, so much that I'm not going to stop trying to fix it until I'm done fixing it!!
Cheers,
