Open Notepad, and copy EVERYTHING in the box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixme.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4"!

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.exe]

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES. Wait for the merged successfully prompt. (Rename your files back) Reboot and see if you now have IE and Explorer back :tazz:

Ok. You are quite possibly the SMARTEST person on the planet !!! :tazz:

I did not have to add these keys, all I had to do was delete them. They were already there but were pointing to "explorer_dbg" or some other nonsensical value. Now I can sleep! ;)

THANK YOU
;)

I was actually having you delete the keys not adding them ;)

At any rate, post a new HiJackThis log for me because there are some more items that need to go ;)

Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

O16 - DPF: {1D0D9077-3798-49BB-9058-393499174D5D} - file://c:\counter.cab

Close HiJackThis.

Then I recommend doing this to make sure everything is gone:

First, download, install, and run CleanUp! (so the scan won't take as long because cleanup will clear temporary files) *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, backup it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running Cleanup!

Please download ewido security suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run Ewido.
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Reboot into normal mode.

Then, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan and a new HiJackThis log.

Here they are.
Ok. Now that I have bought all these tools:
Bitdefender
XoftSpy
SpyBot
Spyware Doctor
Registry Mechanic
Adaware
Registry Fix

What do I keep? I don't mind purchasing ewido and ActiveScan if they are the best solution. Can you please reccommend the fewest, best tools that need to be loaded to do the job? I am a minimalist. I don't like to have extra stuff cluttering up the works.

Thanks again for all your help. You solved the problem with a pinpoint approach, not a broad sweep as I was getting elsewhere. I appreciate the effort. Not sure if you get notified so I wanted to post that I donated to the cause. It was worth every penny!!

I apologize for not being able to respond last night! Geeks to Go was being moved to a new server so the site was down for a while. I did receive the donation! Thank you very much! That was very generous of you :tazz:

Ok, as far as recommendations. The first one is to get XP Service Pack 2. It has great security features. http://www.microsoft.com click on "Windows Update" on the left hand side.

Let's see to minimize, there is no need for 2 registry cleaning programs, I've never used either of the ones you have so whichever you like best, keep (Registry Mechanic or Registry Fix)!

Definitely keep Spybot & Ad-Aware.

I do not recommend running more than one anti-virus program as they don't play well together. So, either keep BitDefender or AVG. Since you already paid for BitDefender then keep it ;)

I really like Ewido, but after the 2 week trial it turns into a freeware version with updates still available. The real-time protection will no longer be present but you will still be able to have Ewido scan and remove infections. You have other programs already on your computer that offer real-time protection. So, this is up to you.

You can probably get rid of Xoftspy since you have all of the other programs on your computer.

I really don't see any need to purchase ActiveScan. You can run the free online version whenever you want and it disinfects viruses. Normally, it also finds items marked as "no disinfected" but unless these are in the registry it gives the file path and file name so you can delete the offending file yourself. Your ActiveScan log was pretty clean and it didn't find leftover spyware which is awesome!

I think that about covers it! Do any of the programs you have come with a firewall? If not, you need one! Two good free versions available are Sygate and ZoneAlarm

Here are some tutorials on using SpyBot & Ad-Aware:Any other questions for me?

Thanks so much, again, for your donation! And you are very welcome!

No problem on the wait. Actually your timing was perfect as i just now logged back in. From an untrained eye, a lot of these programs have a good deal of feature overlap. So one more round of questions please:

AVG vs BitDefender
I don't mind purchasing AVG and removing BitDefender if you think AVG is better. If its a wash then I will keep BD

Ewido
Does it have an advantage over what I have? What software would it replace?

What functionality will the firewall add to what I have?

Thanks again,
you are the best

I don't think one is better than the other. :tazz:

Ewido

It protects against Trojans, Worms, Dialers, Hijackers, Spyware, and Keyloggers. But as far as what would replace it is hard to say. The reason I really like it is because it's able to remove extremely tough infections that other programs aren't able to remove! It's not perfect, of course that's no different from any other protection program but it does a great job!

What functionality will the firewall add to what I have?

Actually, XP does have a built in firewall so to minimize there is probably no need to get another firewall. Just be sure to get XP Service Pack 2!

I'm very glad I was able to help!
