Hi, I hope I am posting in the right place. This malware attacked my laptop and while McAfee caught the trojan, it couldn't stop it.

I think I was able to get rid of everything, some items having to be sent to McAfee Shredder (the infected dll files that won't remove).

My computer appears to be running okay, with one major exception - I cannot get on the internet. The provider has checked the modem and its fine. They tried to help me and we discovered the IP address is getting a 169..... address, which they say is assigned when the connection isn't made (I am probably saying this wrong).

We tried to clear it by doing the ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/renew and the same thing happened. After several attempts to connect, it was determined the problem is my computer.

I am afraid that perhaps when in task manager I stopped a process on the wrong item originally - I think I may have stopped "system.exe" not 100% sure.

So I got the XP Professional Operating Disk and tried to use that - I am not quite sure where to go with it.

I ran diagnostics by hitting F12 at the beginning and everything is coming up okay. I noticed on the ports that the items that pop up, say that there is some other diagnostic tool to check - it isn't checked the route I was going.

Almost forgot, I've tried to do a system restore twice and it will not restore.

At this point I am stumped and seeking advice. Please help!

If it helps, I did run McAfee again and no virus was found.
