Do you get an error message when you try to open these programs? Or do they just fail to start up without warning?

Does Internet Explorer open in safe mode?

I hope you do not mind me popping into the conversation, but I have the same problem. Except instead of Safari I'm using Internet Explorer and I do not understand what you mean by Internet Explorer running in safe mode. I clicked on Firefox. My mouse started doing the circle loading thing, I guess the equivalent of the hour glass, and nothing happened. I click on Internet and it opens like normal.
