I've got a Dell Inspiron E1405 and the screen does not work. I can boot up the computer and it runs but the screen does not display correctly. The Dell logo will come on for about a second at the beginning of the boot up but then quickly disappears behind a blank screen. I can hook up an external monitor but that removes the portability aspect of the laptop. When I switch between the LCD screen and the external monitor using <FN> <F8>, the laptop screen will even flash on for about a second and then quickly go back to blank. The computer is out of warranty and Dell's website was not helpful. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds like the LCD is shorting out.
It is possible to repair but be ready to spend some money.
I would take it to a laptop shop and ask them for a estimate.
I believe you are going to find it will probably be cheaper to buy a new laptop.
Let us know what your results are.
