Hello again! I would be Ludo Siren: and I have a problem with Inspiron e1705 notebook.
You see, recently my AC adapter died. And so naturally I got it replaced. The model of the adapter is different than the one I had before, if that is at all a substantial piece of information, but it works well! It gives the laptop the power it needs: but that's not the problem. I went to turn on my computer, but I keep getting
"NTLDR is Missing
Press any key to restart".
I tried that and it just repeated so I turned the computer off. I tried turning it on and off a few times but nothing happened. There are currently no disks in the drive and I haven't tried to upgrade it or anything...
Can anyone please help me with this problem? If you need more information: just ask!
I'm a computer novice, so please if things could be walked through or kept simple I would appreciate it!

It doesn't start at all, or you're stuck at the same error message?

It may/may not help
In most cases, that "NTLDR is Missing" error is caused by boot being messed up.

Boot.ini repair?
Not sure how to edit it from outside windows. Being a hidden file I can never get a command prompt to bring it up correctly.

If you have Windows CD...(if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)

1. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD and assure that your CD-ROM drive is capable of booting the CD.
2. Once you have booted from CD, do NOT select the option that states: Press F2 to initiate the Automated System Recovery (ASR) tool.
You’re going to proceed until you see the following screen, at which point you will press the “R” key to enter the recovery console:

3. After you have selected the appropriate option from step two, you will be prompted to select a valid Windows installation (typically number “1″).
Select the installation number, and hit Enter.
If there is an administrator password for the administrator account, enter it and hit Enter (if asked for the password, and you don't know it, you're out of luck).
You will be greeted with this screen, which indicates a recovery console at the ready:

4. There are eight commands you must enter in sequence to repair your problem..
NOTE. Make sure, you press Enter after each command. Make sure, all commands are exact, including "spaces".
These commands are as follows:

CD..
ATTRIB -H C:\\boot.ini
ATTRIB -S C:\\boot.ini
ATTRIB -R C:\\boot.ini
del boot.ini
BOOTCFG /Rebuild

Note about the above command.
BOOTCFG /REBUILD command which searches for pre-existing installations of Windows XP and rebuilds sundry essential components of the Windows operating system, recompiles the BOOT.INI file and corrects a litany of common Windows errors.
It is very important that you do one or both of the following two things:
A.) Every Windows XP owner must use /FASTDETECT as OS Load Option when the rebuild process is finalizing.
B.) If you are the owner of a CPU featuring Intel’s XD or AMD’s NX buffer overflow protection, you must also use /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as an OS Load Option.
For the Enter Load Identifier portion of this command, you should enter the name of the operating system you have installed.
If, for example, you are using Windows XP Home, you could type Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition for the identifier (it's not crucial, however what the name is, as long, as it's meaningful).
Here is your computer screen:

5. Following command verifies the integrity of the hard drive containing the Windows XP installation. While this step is not an essential function in our process, it’s still good to be sure that the drive is physically capable of running windows, in that it contains no bad sectors or other corruptions that might be the culprit:

CHKDSK /R

6. This last command writes a new boot sector to the hard drive and cleans up all the loose ends we created by rebuilding the BOOT.INI file and the system files. When the Windows Recovery Console asks you if you are Sure you want to write a new bootsector to the partition C: ? just hit “Y”, then Enter to confirm your decision:

FIXBOOT

7. It’s time to reboot your PC by typing
EXIT
and pressing Enter.

With any luck, your PC will boot successfully into Windows XP as if your various DLL, Hive, EXE and NTLDR errors never existed.

If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomput...om/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.c...hp?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow instructions from Step #3 above.

It's stuck at the same message each time. And I don't have a disk- but I will look through the instructions you gave me!
The computer was working perfectly fine before this- it's just after I replaced the AC adapter that this happened.

Are you sure, the adapter is a correct one?

The only thing I think I'm having a problem with for these instructions is imgburn. I'm not sure it's downloading- I hit download and it just reroutes me to the home download page. I'll try maybe creating a disk with a different program: but if that doesn't work or isn't possible: can this maybe be cleared up?
I'm sure. On the website I purchased it from it was listed as compatible. And when I plug it in it charges the battery just fine. Though admittedly I believe the model of the charger is different than the one I had before. But I believe it is the right one- I think Dell listed the same one. But if you need me to- I can list the model I had prior and the one I have now.

In succession: I successfully downloaded the ISO file to the desktop of this computer and wrote it to a disk via sending it to the CD (or E) drive. I downloaded the file to the disk and inserted it to the only slot on my notebook. From there I went to the boot menu and clicked for it to boot from the CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive. It showed a black screen with a blinking white underscore (this symbol, in case I got the name wrong _ ). But after a moment I got the same NTLDR error. I tried pressing 'r' anyway, but I got the same error repeatedly. Is this because I didn't download it to the CD via Imgburner? I realized though that I was downloading it incorrectly via an advertisement before, so I think I'll try this again with imgburner.

I successfully downloaded Imgburner and successfully wrote the file to a new disk. I booted from the disk. However upon reaching Windows Setup and letting it start up I received this error message:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer." (which I did once before) "If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space." (How do I do this?) "If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters." (Again, how is this done?)

"Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing." (?) "If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:
*** STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF7A5E208, 0XF7A5DF08)

*** pci.sys - Address F76120BF base at F760B000, DateStamp 3b7d855c"

What should I do?

Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.

I got to "Windows Setup" and it was just a blank blue screen, save for a white bar at the bottom that had some stuff going across it: I assume it was booting or something of the sort. But I suppose in the middle of doing so it found whatever error it has listed that I showed above.

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.
If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest: http://www.techspot....topic62524.html
