I am working on a HP Laptop with XP Home SP2 installed.

I am trying to upgrade the computer to SP3 but the upgrade fails. I have ran the chkdsk twice hoping to clean as many errors out that way. I am trying to view the event log due to all kind of error codes but I cannot open the Event Viewer.

My error is "MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\eventvwr.msc."

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

How are you trying to open Event Viewer?
Are you doing it one of the below two ways?



Please follow the steps below to enter the Event Viewer program in Vista. This will give me more information into what is causing your issue. You can get to Event viewer two ways and I will post both for you.

Method One

• Go to
• Start
• In the Search box type in Event Viewer in the search box and press Enter
• From this point you can follow from step four from the below method as they will be the same.

Method Two

• Go to Start
• Right click on the Computer Icon and select Manage
• Navigate to the Event Viewer, You will be prompted to accept the action you are going to perform. Click continue
• On the left window pane click on Local and then expand the Windows entry. This will allow you to see every error for the past 24 hours as well as the last 7 days in the right window pane.
• Look for the ones that correspond to the times that your issue occurred.
• If any are found please double click and expand the error. This will open and give you more information on the error.
• Please include that in your next reply.

OK sorry I looked at your profile and it says you have Vista.


Please follow the steps below to enter the Event Viewer program in XP. This will give me more information into what is causing your issue.

Go to
Start and then click on Run
Type in eventvwr.msc and press Enter
On left side click on Applications On right side look for any RED X about the time of a incident
On left side click on System. On right side look for any Red X about the same time of a incident
Also look for any yellow exclamation mark at the same time in either of the above
If you find any double click on one at a time and take a screenshot.
To take a screenshot click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start
All Programs
Accessories
Paint
In the empty white area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop

My problem is i cannot open event viewer to see what errors are caused.

My error message is MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\eventvwr.msc

Found this in another thread here on GTG.


Please right click this LINK, choose SAVE LINK AS or SAVE TARGET AS, and save it somewhere on your computer where you will remember where it is located. Then find the file on your computer and double-click it to run it. Click YES to the warning: Are you sure you want to add the information in FILE LOCATION HERE\msi.reg to the registry? Then reboot your computer and once rebooted see if you can go to START-->RUN and type services.msc and have the Services windows appear.

I followed the thread and when I got to this point:

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\inf folder.
Locate the srchasst.inf file.
Right click it and select Install.

If it asks for the path for msgr3en.dll, and you don't have your Windows XP CD, type in the following

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

I do not have the XP CD so I typed this path and there is no folder titled "ServicePackFiles"

OK this was a oversight on my part. You will need to adjust folder options to get the I386 folder to show.

The Windows\inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders

If this doesn't work then try the following

Go to Start and then to Run
Type in mmc and then click Enter
Does a blank mmc open?

sorry. The inf folder is visible but there is no SystemPackFiles folder.

And yes to the empty mmc.

OK then let's proceed.

In the empty console, Go to

FILE and then to ADD/REMOVE SNAP-INS

click ADD

Select Event Viewer

ADD button, FINISH button, CLOSE button, then OK button

In the console, you should see Event Viewer

Go to FILE and then to SAVE AS, click the DESKTOP button on the left and save it as eventvwr.msc

Now close the mmc

on your desktop, double click eventvwr.msc

Does it open? Event Viewer?

When I go to add an Add-In, I get an error message that say:

MMC has detected an error in a snap-in. It is recommended that you shut down and restart MMC.

My options are to report the error to Microsoft, and then shutdown MMC.

or

Ignore this error and continue running.
