Hi,
Just a couple of questions for you,
What operating system are you running?.
Does the screen go into standby at all or does it just go black?
What steps if any have you taken to repair the situation? eg reinstalled the software
Finally did you buy or download the software?...

Hi
I am running XP, with SP3.
The screen just goes black but stays on. Originally the computer did a complete restart when i launched Revit but I reinstalled XP with the CD and now the screen just goes black with the computer staying on.
I have tried reinstalling the sotware 3 or 4 times now but that didn't work.
No i did not download the software originally, i used a student version CD. After that failed i tried downloading it from http://www.students.autodesk.com, it's a legitimate site and is not a pirated version (check it out if you don't believe me). I only tried this hoping that there might be something wrong with the CD i got, but the same thing happened. If you still think i pirated it I'd be happy to show you something to prove i haven't, whatever that is.
Thanks

Hi
That's fine no proof necessary its just ot check as i know a few people who have downloaded and its failed but that's just to check.
On the screen front what graphics card do you have?
I know a quick google search returned a few users who hadn't updated their graphics drivers in a while and there was a conflict of some kind.
Also can you get back to your desktop at all?. for example pressing ctrl-alt-delete does that launch task manager or have you tried getting back to the desktop eg by pressing alt-tab. Just a few tests.
Finally is there anything in Event Viewer? regarding Revit.

- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Performance and Maintenance, then click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
- In the console tree, click Event Viewer
- Then click Applications. Take a look down the list and see if anything is listed for Revit at the time of the blackscreen.

Ok then.
This all seems like a shot in the dark I’m afraid as I’ve never used the program but hopefully we will get a result somewhere.
Revit Colour mode.
Can you check your colour options. According to the company if they are not correct the screen will display black which could be the correct symptoms.
1. On the Start menu, click Settings > Control Panel.
2. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Display icon.
3. In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Settings tab and set the Color quality to True Color or higher.
Also Revit requires a minimum of 16 million colours to display properly. Make sure that the Colour Palette in Display Properties is set for at least 16 million (16777216) colours.
Also just another test when the screen goes black do the Num Lock and Caps lock keys still respond? Eg the activation LED will light up if it does.
I think after that your integrated chip just maybe isn’t powerful enough.

I tried changing the color quality but the only two options are Highest (32 bit) and Medium (16 bit). I currently have it in Highest (32 bit).
Well, now instead of getting a blank screen...i get a blue screen of death! Hmmm at least somethings different now...

Hi,
That could be a good thing. It could be a display driver which has caused the BSOD and possibly the whole problem. It maybe didn't update.
Can you go to C:\Windows\Minidump
There will be a file in there. If you attach it to your next reply. There may be a few, but the file name is the date the log was made so look for the latest date in there.
If there is no mini dump then:
1. Go Start > Control Panel > Click the System Icon
2. Click the Advanced Tab
3. Then go to Startup and Recovery -> Click Settings
4. Enable Write an Event to the system log
5. Disable Automatically Restart
6. Select the following debugging information:
* Small memory dump (64 Kb)
* Small Dump Directory : %SystemRoot%\Minidump
7. Confirm all and restart the computer.
Then when the system next crashes again go to C:\Windows\Minidump and the latest file should be there. Just attach it to your reply.

OK then,
We cant attach a straight minidump. We will have to convert it into a .txt.
Follow the instructions below carefully:
Download WinDbg
Click Start > Programs > Debugging Tools For Windows
Then click on WinDbg
Now click File > Symbol File path
In the box that pops up paste the following text:
Now when the message pops up about saving to Workspace click Yes.
Now go to File > Open Crash Dump
Now you need to Navigate to your minidump in C:/windows/minidump
Now wait a couple of minutes. Then, In the bottom of the mini dump text screen there will be a flashing cursor, type in:
Then do File > Save As and save it to your desktop and then attach. If its to big then you will just have to copy and paste the ext to your reply.

Not sure if this is what you want...Hope it helps!
KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.

Arg2: bf8f0d29, The address that the exception occurred at

Ok,
There has been a couple of other users who have had the same BSOD as you have.
1
Can you get me an everest report. I'm going to try and do a close search for your driver to make sure.
Follow THESE instructions for help.
2
I'm going to request that you run Memtest.
This will take some time and the longer you can leave it running the better. I would say start it later this evening and leave it running overnight as you wont be able to use your PC.
Read This Thread on how to setup and use Memtest. Then get back to us with any errors created and the results and we will go from there.

OK great thanks for that.
You can download your driver HERE. Just download and run. Hopefully that should update your card and stop the problem...hopefully.
Then Go Here and update Directx. Again download and then just run it and see if it updates anything.
Then i will wait for your results of the Memtest scan

Hmm i downloaded the driver update but couldn't figure out how to install it. Sorry about my computer ineptness! I did however install the direct X update. Still trying to get the Memtest scan working...Can't get the USB version to work.
Thanks for all your help!
