Is anything opening like
Paint
Wordpad
My Computer
Calculator

If not you may have an infection.
Exe files not working in mass numbers is not a good issue to have and will usually mean there is a serious infection.

Thanks rshaffer61.

I can't get into any of those except My Computer (but then no further).

I am really careful with this home PC. I run the free antivirus stuff all the time.

Once it is cleaned up i'll come back for suggestions on which virus stuff to get free or purchase.

Actually the only thing working is Google Chrome for some strange reason. Atleast i can access emails and surf the web, just can't download anything. very strange.

Took the PC into a shop to redo the hard drive and re-install XP.
I try to keep it really clean but i guess trying to download from torrents was a huge mistake.

thanks to everyone for your help.

Yep P2P is a big problem and raises the risk of infections and problems.
We will continue to monitor for the results of the PC shop.
Just a word of advice,
Take out partition(S)
Repartition
Format using NTFS
then load fresh
