thumbnail images OK but can't display full size

Took about 120 digital pictures on a recent trip using a Nikon Coolpix L18. Downloaded them to my PC using the Nikon transfer software. All of the pictures display fine as thumbnails. But about 20 or so won't display at all in full size. I've read that this can occur if a digital camera is switched off before the save completes, but based on the sequence of photos I know this would not be the cause here. I would think that the images are there since the thumbnails are complete, but can't figure what is causing the problem with the full size.
