yahoo messenger comes up as VISIBLE when i login to email

How would I set things so I can log into yahoo mail and yahoo messenger won't show me as VISIBLE without my knowledge?

My normal defaults to yahoo messenger are for it to not log in automatically and to bring me in as INVISIBLE when I *do* activate it. Apparently, when I access my yahoo email Yahoo Messenger apparently logs me in but I don't even see it. However, people on my messenger list see me as being ONLINE (not INVISIBLE) and message me. I just want to check my email without being signed into messenger and deal with messages of "why don't you message me back?" or "I see u on so I know you're there". I don't want to be rude to people but sometimes I have to check my email and go. This "feature" is really inconvenient for me. I don't want yahoo messenger to come up at all when I check my emails.
