it says to use a usb to attach to another drive

I mean a flash drive or an external hard drive via USB.

If you suspect viruses, don't backup anything with the extension:
.exe
.zip
.rar
.scr
.html
You can also run a virus scan on the drive after everything has been backed up to it.

Backup all the data that you don't want to lose. Pics, music, documents and everything else that you want to save.

So you are comfortable with losing all the data on your computer?
Keep downloading Ubuntu, it may help. Burn the file to a disc, boot with it, and try accessing the hard drive (or manually mounting it)

If everything that you want to keep is safely stored in an external drive, then you are good.

Try Ubuntu once you are done downloading and burning.

Shouldn't take too long. Maybe a couple of minutes to about 10 minutes on older systems.
The screen should show a Ubuntu logo and a progress bar.

If it isn't working, then try booting into Ubuntu without checking the CD.
