Before i restarted windows, my AVAST anti-virus detected a virus, but then AVAST automatically shutdown. After this, a few error messages saying something about the "kernel" and "page" errors. Then i went to repair AVAST on add/remove programs. After repairing, i restarted the computer, and after the welcome screen the background of my desktop came up, but no icons or anything will appear, and it appears to be stuck. I shut-down the computer a couple more times, but the problem still persists.

What is the make of your computer (Dell, HP, etc.)?
Can you try booting into Safe Mode?
http://www.computerh...sues/chsafe.htm

What viruses did Avast remove, or did Avast just die after detecting the threats?

I tried safe mode, but it won't work. The make of my computer is eMachines...yep. Also, AVAST just died after detecting the virus.

Click Ctrl +Alt+Del
It should bring up Windows Task Manager
Now click on New Task at the bottom right of the window
Type in b]devmgmt.msc[/b]
Then click Enter or OK

Does Device Manager open up?

I tried safe mode, but it won't work

Does it hang at a driver, or just stay at a black screen?

Try typing in explorer.exe
In Task Manager.
