Tried running an adapter test from Freestone. Wouldn't work. A program window said it failed to run the test.
I do know is that changing the hardware acceleration down one notch eliminates the problem with the cursor, but not the startup screen (it is really bad).
And things seem slow.
One thing that still lurks in the back of my mind is that all was fine until my original malware problem was corrected. This driver or card stuff started immediately on the very next startup after the puter was turned off. Seems too much of a coincidence. Some file got zapped in the process?
One other VERY strange thing is that I have a services.exe using up 30% or more of my cpu continuously whenever I reduce my hardware acceleration. Maybe that is suppose to happen?
Another thing I noticed was that when I went to play a Yahoo game, my entire screen went black for a second. And another time, when I scrolled down quickly on the game that a small part of the monitor display stayed where it was. Refresh, or going to another screen and back, corrects it. Pics of game before and after refresh attached.
One last thing that I just remembered... before I had any of these problems, that same java based game would sometimes lock up (just the game, not the puter or window) when things were moving fast. Over a short period of time, it would unlock itself and continue playing.
Where do I go from here?
Thanks,
C

So what do I do?
I installed the recommended driver. Still have strange cursor problem. And video update is slow, relatively speaking.
Any thoughts?
TIA

use the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to determine the version of DirectX that is installed on your computer, follow these steps:

1. Click Start... then Run...
2. Type dxdiag... and then click OK...
3. On the System tab, note the version of DirectX displayed on the DirectX Version line.
4. On the DirectX Files tab, check the version information for each DirectX file.
5. When you are finished checking file versions, click Exit...
let us know what version you have installed

Hey happyrock!
Thanks for the reply.

BTW, my windows update showed this as optional...
ATI Driver Update for ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Date last published: 1/5/2005
Update for 128MB DDR ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

I realize it is older than what I installed, but I wonder if it is more compatible.

BTW, my windows update showed this as optional...
ATI Driver Update for ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Date last published: 1/5/2005
Update for 128MB DDR ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

I realize it is older than what I installed, but I wonder if it is more compatible.

try it...

Sheesh!!!!!
That didn't work. Gave me a black screen. Fooled around with it for a few hours to no avail.

When I reinstalled the Catalyst software, I got this on reboot...
STOP: 0X0000008E
ati2cqag.dll
It was when it was supposedly optimizing my whatever.

Anything else I can do?

Hey happyrock,

Almost got back.
Still have lines through a couple desktop icons. Otherwise, back to the way it was.
Going from one busy window to another still gives white windows. Can still watch deleted emails disappear one by one. Same as it was before.

you've tried older and newer drivers with limited or no help...
only 2 things left...
try a different monitor to make sure its not the monitor or its settings...
try a different video card...

If I can ever get my wife off of her puter, I will try to plug her monitor in. I assume all I will have to do is reboot.
She has a Dell puter also.
Then, I'll try her video card if the monitor doesn't solve the problem.
Anything I need to do besides plug them in and reboot?
Thanks, hardrock!!!!

unplug both from the wall BEFORE doing anything...
if you wind up having to swap video cards ...ground yourself by touching bare metal in the case to discharge any static BEFORE TOUCHING ANYTHING IN THE CASE...

I will try to plug her monitor in. I assume all I will have to do is reboot

yep...

Thanks for the input!
I already knew those things, but could see someone frying their board or worse... themselves.

PS - gonna take me a while to get her off her puter :)

pull out the credit card...wave it slowly in front of her face...then toss it towards the front door while QUICKLY
stepping to the side (think bullfighter) so as to avoid being trampled... :)

Hardrock,
It is not the monitor. Was going to do the card, but had reached my limit using her puter.
Any way to test my card?
If not, I will probably go get one at WalMart and try it.
Cheeta

BTW - had my credit card in my hand, but realized a new card would cost a lot less :)
