Wireless is not showing--just disappeared, the wireless assistant won't open even after upgrading to newer software. The light is amber. So far I have restored to manufacturers setting, updated programs, took the battery out and held the start button for 60 seconds...nothing worked. I don't have a clue as to what happened. All help appreciated as I really, really need this laptop and can't replace it just now.
Than you in advance.

Hi there :)

(by JohnWill at TSG)
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the affected systems.
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Make and exact model and hardware version of any other network equipment, like a repeater, a booster, hi-gain antenna, etc.
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Thank you for helping me! Thank you. I use to have free wireless
connections from all my neighbors and they have told me repeatedly to
use it and it saved on my fixed income. So no router here. I had free
wireless Wi-Fi. Then it disappeared. I currently have dial up ( AOL) and it
is very slow. I don't know very much about computers but am trying to
follow your instructions.
I hope this will help find the answer.
I'm using;

Compaq Presario V6101US Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows XP
Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver
HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP
09-2006 7.56.0.0 A

IE, XP Media, I've installed all updates the lastest being SP3 which does not take effect until I restart but I have no hope of it fixing anything at this point.

I did a restore to manufacters settings ( the beginning) then I downloaded and installed updates and updated
Ricoh 5-in-1 Card Reader and
HP Wireless Assistant
01-2007 3.00 D because it won't open (still doesn't)
from H P support

CMD did not open command prompt; I typed Command Prompt and followed the rest of the directions.

Thanks!
