internet explorer 8 crashes on start up

I need some help trying to figure out why my internet explorer crashes when I start it. This just started happening recently. I also use Firefox but I need internet explorer to work because I have a lot of software that uses this web browser. All my software for my business that I use is now giving me run time errors. I scanned for viruses but did not find any. When I get the error message on internet explorer, the web browser does not disappear. It just opens another tab by itself and loads a page. Can anybody please help me on how to get rid of this problem. Thank you.
