My brother has had this computer for a couple of years and he wanted to get a new desktop, so he gave me his old one (the one I'm using right now.) Anyway, there is a headphone jack on the front of my tower that is built into the CD Drive, but every time I plug a set of headphones into that port, nothing happens. I've also tried other ports that are on the back of the tower, but nothing happens either. On my old desktop, there was a green headphone jack on the right side of one of the speakers I had, as well as a Microphone jack, and it worked great. I'm just a little confused here because I've never dealt with a Headphone jack that was actually built into a CD Drive/the tower. Help me help you? Thanks.

Also, I should mention that there is nothing in device manager with a yellow ? or !. I had to install many drivers when I first got this computer because my brother reinstalled XP on it. I should also mention that most of the computer is custom built. The case is from Asus though, as well as the motherboard. My sound card is Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Surround Sound Digital, if that helps.

Does the cdrom drive have a volume control?
If so turn it completely one way and see if the volume comes on.
To check the system itself do the following steps....

Check speaker connection to back of system
Check volume control in windows by doing the following:
Go to Start and The Run
Type in sndvol32.exe and press Enter
Make sure Master Volume is not muted and turned up
Check Cd Player volume is not muted and turned up

Hi, thanks for the reply, but what you told me to do does not work. And, yes, the CD Drive does have a volume control on it, right next to the headphone jack. I checked everything so that it would show up in the control, un-muted everything, plugged the headphones in, messed with the volume control on the CD Drive but got nothing.

Now go to:
Start and the Control Panel
Then go to Sounds And Audio Devices
Click On the Audio Tab and in the Sound Playback make sure your Sound Card is the Default Device
If not please click on the Drop Down Menu and change it

If the above does not resolve the issue then do the following...

Download and install EVEREST
Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.

DO NOT INCLUDE ANYTHING UNDER THE LINE THAT SAYS "DEBUG- PCI"

SB = Sound Blaster.

It's also 5.1 Digital Surround Sound.

In post 3 you said:

Hi, thanks for the reply, but what you told me to do does not work.

in response to this:

Check speaker connection to back of system
Check volume control in windows by doing the following:
Go to Start and The Run
Type in sndvol32.exe and press Enter
Make sure Master Volume is not muted and turned up
Check Cd Player volume is not muted and turned up

Are you saying you have no master volume control?

Sorry for the confusion, let me clear it up:
What I should have said was: What you told me to do did not fix my problem.
I have a master volume control.

Does that make things clearer?

Yes thank you.
This is not looking good at all.
Since Device Manager shows no issue with soundcard.
Control Panel shows the SB Live 5.1 is installed and working.
Volume Control is not muted and turned up.
Headphones I assume have a volume control and that is turned up?
You have tried both front and rear headphone connection with same issue.
You have verified that indeed the headphones do work?
By chance have you tried a known working set of speakers to check the sound?

Yeah, tried every port on my computer, and yes, with the headphone volume turned up. No, I haven't swapped speakers yet, but I doubt that is the issue...I am starting to believe that this could be a hardware issue, and that a cable might not be connected to the motherboard or that perhaps there is no cable at all. If that is the case, I'll just buy a gaming headset that plugs into USB, and hopefully that will work. Thanks anyway.

Are you getting any system sounds like windows startup or shutdown?

If not it may very well be a hardwire connection problem.
If it was just the cdrom not playing then I would say that maybe the audio cable wasn't plugged in from the cdrom to the MOBO.

Yeah, I get a sort of long, loud beep, then a little quiet short beep. (Could I verify what the problem is using the BIOS?)
I should inform you that if I unplug my surround sound from the back, and plug my headphones into the green port, I get volume from my headphones, but the only thing that will control the volume on headphones then, is the volume control on the headphones.
I took a look inside of the computer, and on the CD Rom, on the same side of the headphone jack, directly ahead of it, there is a small six pin connector that I could connect something too, but I have no such cable available. I could take pictures to show you what I am talking about, if need be.

Yes please take a picture if you would.

Since the headphones get volume then I have to believe the problem is the speakers.
Do the speakers have a seperate power button and if so is the power light on them showing it on?
Is the Master volume control on the surround sound turned up?

Go to Control Panel then to Sounds and Audio Devices
At the bottom of the window click on the Advanced button next to Speaker Settings
Make sure that in the Speaker Setup drop down menu you have selected 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers

Let me know what your findings are.
