Hi all.

My sound/audio worked fine, until a couple of days ago when I reformatted the C drive, only to realise that I hadn't taken into account the drivers, and found myself without an audio driver installed.

There is an audio card in there, though I'm pretty clueless about what's inside the computer, so please bear with me, ha. Now I tried using a programme which searches for any drivers which need up-dating or installing and it brought up the audio soundcard, but then midway through installation of the driver, it reboots. I tried this multiple times, and once with all security programming completely off incase it was interfering, but again, it reboots.

As I have seen on other posts, people have pasted long summaries of their system information, but I have no idea how and where to find that info, so assuming this is the first step in tracking down the problem, can somebody first tell me how to do that, haha.

Here's hoping somebodys willing to help out a clueless beginner! Thanks in advance.

Go HERE to Gigabiytes website and you can download all the original drivers for your MOBO.
One word of advice...
If you have no MOBO drivers disk then I suggest you install the MOBO chipset driver first. That would be the one under the Chipset heading that has a date of 2006/01/18

Then install the Audio driver second.

Another piece of advice, if you have no MOBO drivers disk then I suggest you download every driver for the MOBO and burn them to a cd. That way you will have them for future reference.

Thanks for the reply!
I installed the MOBO chipset driver, as instructed, and then the audio driver, but alas, the same crash happened during the audio driver installation.
It always occurs about 2 thirds into the installation, and always just after 3 pop-ups crop up, telling me that the installation has found files newer than the ones being installed already on the system. Is this important? Should I erase these files from somewhere first?

Let's find out what is causing the crash.


Download WhoCrashed from the link in my signature below
This program checks for any drivers which may have been causing your computer to crash....

Click on the file you just downloaded and run it.
Put a tick in Accept then click on Next
Put a tick in the Don't create a start menu folder then click Next
Put a tick in Create a Desktop Icon then click on Install and make sure there is a tick in Launch Whocrashed before clicking Finish
Click Analyze
It will want to download the Debugger and install it Say Yes

WhoCrashed will create report but you have to scroll down to see it
Copy and paste it into your next reply

As an addition,
I un-installed the remainder of the previous audio card, assuming maybe it was clashing with the re-installation. Upon doing this, and trying to re-install with a clean slate, this time the downloaded realtek audio info installed, and prompted to restart to complete installation.
I restarted, and was then greeted with a microsoft window asking whether or not i wanted windows to automatically install. i clicked yes, assuming this was part of completing the installation. halfway through installation, it asked for a disk to be inserted, so lacking a disk, i simply found the requested file within the download folder, and it continued to install, only to reach 100% and then CRASH.

Feels like I'm back to square one, i must admit, but hopefully this tidbit of info will help in detecting the problem.

portcls.sys is audio driver.

Let's go about this a different way.
Reboot the system and go into Safe Mode
Then go to Device Manager by doing the following.

Please Go to
1: STARTand the click on RUN
2: Type in devmgmt.msc
3: Click Enter

Scroll down to Audio and Video and find the Audio Driver
Right click and then Uninstall it.

Now shut down Device Manager and then reboot the system and go back into Normal Mode
The system should now find the Audio again.
When it asks about the driver point it to the driver you downloaded.
Hopefully this will now install with no problem.
You may be asked to reboot after installation and if so do so.
Let me know if this fixes the problem.

Did as instructed, and sadly, the same crash occurs as the installation reaches 100%.

OK let's try something else here.

Lets see what you have in your startup

Please click on
Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Startups
Then uncheck everything and restart.



Once this is done then try to install the soundcard again.
Let me know the results

Unchecked everything in startup, restarted, attempted install only to have it crash at the very same spot.

Ok lets try a different download then. Maybe we just have a corrupted download.
Go HERE to SIS 7012 audio driver for XP
Choose your nearest download site and get the file.
Try installing it from this site and see if it will finish now

Downloaded the SiS audio driver as instructed, yet this time, the initial installation from the download doesn't even complete. It gets about 10% into the install and then the setup window simply vanishes.

OK can you open device manager and get a screenshot of the entries with the yellow exclamation marks or the red X's?



To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop


Attach it to your next reply
