I've attempted to install a working cd-rw (taken from another computer) as slave with a dvd as master.

On startup Windows begins to load and then hangs, with the progress bar limping along (I waited over 15 min before shutting down).

Checked and rechecked jumpers and connections, BIOS shows the drive as IDE Secondary Slave [ATAPI CD-RW 16/1] with Access Mode [AUTO]. Also tried just the cd-rw as master with same hang result. While with just the dvd installed as master, Windows starts fine.

I'm stumped, any ideas out there?

I had a similar problem when i tried using a H-P burner in a computer i was building. The problem was specail drivers needed for the burner but the only drivers found were for H-P computers and they did not work in my comp. With the prices of cd-rw's so low it would be easier to buy a new one from newegg or tiger direct, than to spend a lot of time to correct the problems.

I don't even bother with cd burners since the dvd burners are easier to find and the price is the same.

SRX660, thanx. That makes sense since it came out of a Compaq. I've posted this question on a number of forums and you're the first to come up with a probable answer.
