My PC has been hijacked by CWS, and a trojan called "TROJ_AGENT.JI" (this according to TrendMicro's HouseCall). I have tried following TM's directions to get rid of the trojan, but nothing seems to be working. When I try to access something from my desktop, I get a message stating something to the effect of "Windows can not access the selected device, path or file. You may not have required permissions to access this." I have disabled System Restore to keep CWS from popping back up, but even this does not seem to be working.

I use the following programs for protection:
SpySweeper (which finds the CWS bugs, but seems to be unsuccessful in getting rid of them)
Spybot S&D (same thing)
ZoneAlarm
TrendMicro HouseCall (how I found the trojan)

Hi there and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Kat, and I will be helping you to get your computer fixed back up and on the go! :tazz:

You have a CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!Reboot your computer into normal windows.

After you have done the above:

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Please make a reply here with a fresh HJT log taken after all above steps are complete, as well as a copy of the Ewido scan report!!

I should add, at this point, that upon restarting the computer, it was a rather long time before the Desktop would allow me to access anything.

Okay, what's next?

Looking much better now! There's still a few things we need to do!

1. First, get rid of NewDotNet. Go to Control Panel:Add/Remove Programs and remove it. If it is not there, go here and follow Procedure 4: http://www.newdotnet.com

2. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.
O2 - BHO: Class - {3961D259-E678-4571-8985-CC45A0FEBCF4} - C:\WINDOWS\appmk32.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sdkvj.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkvj.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [New.net Startup] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~1.DLL,NewDotNetStartup -s
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O16 - DPF: {12398DD6-40AA-4C40-A4EC-A42CFC0DE797} - http://www.xxxtoolba...006_regular.cab
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\d3zx.exe" /s (file missing)
Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

[/b]Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\WINDOWS\d3zx.exe
C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkvj.exe
C:\WINDOWS\appmk32.dll
After that, Reboot.

Reply here with a fresh HJT log!

--------------------

I should note that I ran CWShredder again just before I ran this HTJ scan, and it said it removed eight infected settings. I am assuming that this is why the IE Home and Search page settings are showing as "about:blank" and "res://C:\WINDOWS\itsig.dll/sp.html#12047" respectively. What should these really be set to for things to work properly again?

I await your kind wisdom.

Sorry----I forgot about this in the previous reply:

That O23 Service: Remote Procedure Call thing is still there, even after following all instructions above. What's the problem?

Hi again! The file for that 023 is missing, what you see is just the leftover entry. If we can't get it to go this way, then we'll try a regfile to get rid of it!

Please reboot into Safe Mode, and open HJT. Scan for a log, and check the foloowing entries, then fix them. Reboot normally, and post another log file for review!
