Need help diagnosing BSoD problem

While my computer is on it seems to randomly shut down and show the blue screen of death for about a second. It usually happens when I'm not in front of my computer and it doesn't stay visible for long enough for me to see what information it is displaying. So, I have some information about what is happening from a small memory dump file and an error log, hopefully you guys can help me out here and tell me what's going on.

What I get from the Event Viewer (Event Viewer [Local] > System):

What I get from the small memory dump (Mini080809-01.dmp - 88 KB) using dumpchk.exe:

NOTE: To get this information I used THIS tutorial to help me. I kept getting errors so I could not get Debugging Tools for Windows to work for me - that is why I just used dumpchk (from Windows Support Tools) to examine the dump.

Then recreate your BSOD... your computer shouldn't automatically restart and you should see the blue screen. Tell me the error code and any parameters (in parenthesis) you see. Also tell any files or drivers it mentioned. Ex. 0x0000007A (0x5a,xxx,xxx,xxx)

After recreating your BSOD, go to the directory C:\Windows\Minidump
Then zip up all the recent dump files in that directory, and attach the .zip archive to your next post.

Usually what programs do you have open at the time of the BSOD?
What security software do you use?

Thanks for your help edge2022. I followed the instructions in the articles you linked to, so next time I get this BSoD I will post the dump files and information I get from it here.

My system was already set to create a small memory dumb before I kept getting the BSoD - so I have zipped up the contents of the C:\WINDOWS\Minidump folder and attached it below:

I do not know what is casing my blue screen of death, so I would not know how to re-create it. But typically I just have a couple internet browsers open and maybe BitComet (for downloading torrents). As for security software, I just use avast! antivirus 4.8 and always have my Windows Firewall on.

Download, and install BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Thanks for your reply Broni. Just as I was writing this reply I got the same blue screen of death that I always get

So, at least I know what was going on when I got the blue screen: I just had a couple Firefox browser windows open, listening to online radio and writing a reply in this thread.

Oh boy, with so many different error causing files, my bet would be some hardware problem.
My bet would go on bad RAM.

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below.

If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, then you have bad RAM.

Check your RAM as said by Broni... the error causing files are different usually indicating a hardware problem.
You can also check your hard drive... go here, and download the appropriate diagnostic... it will usually come as a dic image (.iso file)... in this case, burn it to a disc with ImgBurn or BurnCDCC: http://www.terabyteu...ee-software.htm

If you don't know which utility to use, use Seatools for DOS (Graphical)... run a long diagnostic and tell the results.

Thanks Broni and edge2022 - I will check my RAM and HDD. I will also scan for viruses and go through some other procedures to see if it will help too.

I have two RAM modules - so if I just reboot my PC with only one RAM stick in it at a time, this will check my RAM?

Yes. If no problem with stick #1, remove it, and put stick #2 in.

I did the manual check on both my memory sticks and they both showed up (in the System Properties general tab) and worked fine. I also tested my memory using MemTest (left it on overnight) and this is what I got (with both memory sticks in the motherboard):

There doesn't seem to be any problem with my RAM. So it must be something with my HDD... could it also be a software/program issue, drivers maybe? Anyways, I will be running SeaTools v2.14b for DOS (since I have a Seagate HDD) and will keep looking into this. If you guys have any more suggestions or anything that I should look at or do, please post here. Thanks.

Very well. Run HD test, and we'll go from there.
There is no other way, but checking one thing after another.

Also try booting into Safe Mode: http://www.computerh...sues/chsafe.htm
Wait for the BSOD to come up again (it may not)...
If it doesn't then this is most likely a driver or service problem.
If the BSOD does show up, then I would suspect hardware.

As you can see there aren't any problems with my hard drive. But ever since I cleared my web browser's cache and most of my computer's temporary files (right before I ran MemTest) I haven't been getting the BSOD...

At this point, keep waiting for another BSOD... if another one comes up, then tell the error code along with any drivers, and attach the respective minidump.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I still can't figure out what's causing my BSOD. It seems to go away, and then it comes back - I don't think it's a hardware issue, but at this point, it still might be.
