I've been having this error for over one week. I came apon many search results via google search. After doing a repair of windows XP, i'm able to boot windows and log on to the internet. However, when i log off/restart windows i get the same error message even after repairing windows. It's almost like the repair isn't being saved so to speak.

Where should i start next?

thanks

in order to boot windows yes. I've repaired windows via recovery numerous times now, just to have access to the net in hopes of finding a solution.

Let's start with checking your computer hardware...

1. A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below.DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, then you have bad RAM.

2. Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

Something just struck me, which may or may not be a big deal. My original OS installed on the laptop is xp home edition. When I spoke to Dell requesting a new disc they sent me Media edition. Would this matter at all?

Yes, to do Windows repair, you have to use exactly same Windows version.

I plan to call Dell and explain to them they sent me the wrong disc. If the new disc does not work, i guess i'll be back. :)

Hi guys...excuse my butting in, but would you mind if I checked something here?

A corrupt, non-standard, or missing boot.ini file can also cause this error, so let's take a look at that. Click Start, right click on "My Computer", and choose "Properties". Under the "Advanced" tab, in the "Startup and Recovery" section, click on the "Settings" button. In the window that opens, click on the "Edit" button...a notepad window will open (boot.ini).

Copy and paste the contents of that window here for us.

guys I also have this error, i've tried replacing it through recovery console, replacing ntdetect, ntldr, ntoskrnl.exe or even trying to fix the boot.ini but no luck. also tried chkdsk /r on recovery console.

So what i'm thinking now is repair but the problem is, when i boot the cd, i have to click ENTER. but after that, i don't receive terms of agreement nor the part where i can click R. I am directed to the part where I can delete partition or install windows on that certain partition.

I think i really have the full package of windows xp CD, coz when i place it on the other computer it reads as VRMPFPP_EN which implies Windows XP SP2 retail full package, right? Or am i using the wrong disk?

Thanks a lot. :)
