Is it safe to run the online protection part of Avast with Avira? Avira seems to be better at catching viruses and Avast isn't too bad as a firewall. Or is there a better idea?

I would scrap Avast! completely, and chose a firewall product from the Free Firewalls section of this list.

Avast doesn't provide any firewall.
