First thing is the 512 Ram. This is minimum to run XP correctly without anything else running.
I suggest going to 1 gig as that seems to be the so called Sweet Spot for XP

Go HERE and run the Crucial online scanner.
This will give you the exact memory configuration for your system. You do not have to buy the memory from there, but write down the information and if you need assistance in purchasing the upgrade memory GTG can assist with suggestions also.

Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
7: Attach to your next reply.

Download and install Free Everest Home Edition
Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.

hi i have a toshiba m35x-149 it freezes randomly in windows

You're going to have to try to be a little more specific before rshaffer61 can effectively help you. What are you doing when it freezes? Watching video, writing docs, surfing the internet, watching youtube videos, etc, etc? What happens if you don't do anything at all, does the laptop still freeze? What happens when it freezes? Does it unfreeze by itself... or do you have to power down and restart?

Many laptops can run XP with 512megs with no problem. Many business laptops are only supplied with 512megs, so this amount of ram should not result in any freezing unless the ram is bad, or just too many processes are running at the same time. I would not be quick to upgrade ram to try to fix a freezing problem. The problem is probably elsewhere.

When in Safe Mode, the OS loads minimum drivers and launches minimal Services and Processes. The reason the laptop may not crash in Safe Mode is because of this. While in Safe Mode, have a look at Task Manager by hitting ctrl+alt+del and compare it to the "regular Windows mode" Task Manager. Check to see if certain applications/processes are eating up CPU time. Also, if you have a way to monitor CPU temp and speed, check to see if there's a difference between Safe mode operation and regular mode operation. Heat will freeze a laptop very quickly, and if a process in regular mode is causing the CPU to run at full speed all the time, the laptop may freeze just due to heat.

If you supply more info, I'm sure rshaffer61 can help you out.

Thanks Makai and sorry for the long response. i was gone all day and just returned home.
Lotus8 the information will help with trying to find the resolution also.

Do as Makai suggest with the Task Manager
What problems with getting Autoruns to work?

Also if that does not help try the following and this may help us find the problem.

Lets see what you have in your startup

Please click on
Start and then to Run
Type in msconfig and press Enter
Now click on Startups
Then uncheck everything and restart.
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a startup problem
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.
Post back with the results

Yes the Everest report showed me this
System Memory 480 MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM)

Not a good issue here. You have barely enough memory to run XP without having problems.
The so called Sweet Spot for XP is one gig.
You really need to increase to at least this and that alone may stop your crashes.

By running correctly in safe mode that tells me we are dealing with most likely a driver issue.

Please do the following and post back with the log.

Download WhoCrashed from the link in my signature below
This program checks for any drivers which may have been causing your computer to crash....

Click on the file you just downloaded and run it.
Put a tick in Accept then click on Next
Put a tick in the Don't create a start menu folder then click Next
Put a tick in Create a Desktop Icon then click on Install and make sure there is a tick in Launch Whocrashed before clicking Finish
Click Analyze
It will want to download the Debugger and install it Say Yes

WhoCrashed will create report but you have to scroll down to see it
Copy and paste it into your next reply

Also did the AUTORUNS ever run successfully?
If not can you try it again?

here is the who crshed report

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to WhoCrashed Home Edition 1.01
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This program checks for drivers which have been crashing your computer.

Whenever a computer suddenly reboots without displaying any notice or blue screen of death, the first thing that is often though about is a hardware failure. In reality, on Windows most crashes are caused by malfunctioning device drivers and kernel modules. In case of a kernel error, most computers do not show a blue screen unless they are configured to do so. Instead these systems suddenly reboot without any notice.

This program does post-mortem crash dump analysis with the single click of a button.

Home Edition notice
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This version of WhoCrashed is free for use at home only. If you would like to use this software at work or in a commercial environment you should get the professional edition. The professional edition of WhoCrashed also allows analysis of crashdumps on remote drives and computers on the network and offers more detailed analysis.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Analysis
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crash dump directory: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump

Crash dumps are enabled on your computer.

On Tue 8/18/2009 1:42:26 AM your computer crashed
This was likely caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe
Bugcheck code: 0x9C (0x1, 0x8054E0F0, 0xF2000000, 0x0)
Error: MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION
file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
company: Microsoft Corporation
description: NT Kernel & System
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Likely the culprit is another driver on your system which cannot be identified.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is really responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

It only shows the OSntkrnl as crashing and that is the OS system.
When it crashes are you getting a BSOD or the system just freezes, reboots or shuts down?

Let's check a few other options:

Go to
Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y

If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.
If it does indeed find errors repeat the above steps until it doesn't find any errors.

Let me know if this fixes the problem

Let's check your memory and make sure there is no issue with it. Download memtest86 from the link in my signature below.

Get the file that is named Download - The one you want is "Download - Pre-compiled Bootable ISO (.zip). When it downloads, it will be labeled memtest86+2.11.iso.zip
Unzip the file once you download it. You should have a .iso file in the unzipped directory. It will look like a zip file in some cases but the file name will now be memtest86+2.11.iso

if you don't have a burning program that will burn .ISO files get burncdcc in my signature below.

NOTE...do not put a blank cd in until burncdcc opens the tray for you
1. Start BurnCDCC
2. Browse to the ISO file you want to burn on cd/dvd ....in this case its memtest86.iso
3. Select the ISO file
4. click on Start

Make sure the bios is set for the cd drive as the first boot device
Put the cd in the cd drive and then boot your computer.

Running the Diagnostic Program:

The basic diagnostic screen has five main sections of relevant information. Three at the top which are labeled, PASS %, TEST %, and TEST #. This will basically show you the total progress of the current test, the overall progress of the diagnostic test, and the test number is currently performing.

On the middle left hand side of the of the program interface there is a “Wall Time” section that will keep track of how long the diagnostic test has been running for. This just gives you an idea if you are not attending the testing process.

The main section to look for is the lower half of the screen which is usually blank. As long as the memory testing is going ok with no errors this section of the screen should remain blank. If the diagnostic program finds any serious faults in the memory you will see it display a memory dump of address’s in this section. This is similar to what is displayed on your screen when you encounter a blue screen of death.

You now have most everything you need to know about setting up and testing your memory with diagnostic programs. This guide should help you get to the source of any intermittent problems related to your memory.

Run memtest for at least 2 hours
If it starts showing any errors during that time then you will have to replace the memory
If there are no errors after 2 hours press Esc and that will end the tests
We will then try other options

Again since this does not happen in Safe Mode that is a sign of a driver problem. Safe mode only loads generic drivers and that would answer why it doesn't crash. Normal mode will load hardware specific drivers.

when it crshes it just freezes should i just do another restore and manually track down drivers because the last restore i backd up drivers and reinstaled them. a restore is no big deal if u think that will fix the problem
