:) *brews fresh coffee*

Alright. This will probably take a while. I'll come back when I have the culprit.

No rush. I know it's painful, so you don't want to do it twice :)

Eureka! Culprit Discovered!

+ NVHotkey NVIDIA Hotkey Service, Version 186.03 NVIDIA Corporation c:\windows\system32\nvhotkey.dll

When that is enabled in the start-up menu sleep/shut down does not work and causes a re-start. Without it enabled everything seems to work fine.

There are a few things in the Start-up menu that I don't want starting up with windows like Real Player. Is it okay to leave that un-checked?

I hope, that's going to be it....hehehehe

You can safely disable:

+ TkBellExe RealNetworks Scheduler RealNetworks, Inc. c:\program files\common files\real\update_ob\realsched.exe
+ SunJavaUpdateSched Java™ Platform SE binary Sun Microsystems, Inc. c:\program files\java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe
+ NvCplDaemon NVIDIA Display Properties Extension NVIDIA Corporation c:\windows\system32\nvcpl.dll
+ iTunesHelper iTunesHelper Module Apple Inc. c:\program files\itunes\ituneshelper.exe
+ dellsupportcenter Dell Support Center Updates SupportSoft, Inc. c:\program files\dell support center\bin\sprtcmd.exe

Oh trust me I have my fingers crossed too :)

Do you know by any chance what that is or what it did? Should I try to replace it or just leave it the way it is?

NVIDIA Hotkey Service enables the use of "hot keys" for changing setting on Nvidia graphics.
You can safely leave it disabled.

Just as a little update, everything still works... sort of. It seems like if I leave my computer on for a while and then try to put it to sleep, it re-starts. If I do a hard shut down, then re-start, it'll go to sleep no problem. Since software and malware apparently aren't the problem I'm left thinking it's the hardware.

Try one more thing.
Uninstall Dell Support Center. That thing is worthless, and is known for causing problems.

Alright. That thing is trashed. Everything is working so far. I'll give it a few days and make another report. Is there some way I can know if I have the Nvidia stuff I'm supposed to have?

Seriously, I feel like that neighbor that moves in and seems cool at first but then keeps showing up randomly for weird things like duct tape and pencil sharpeners.

I had a neighbor like that once.
Big hungry dogs kept him quite.
Need I say more? :) :) :) :)
