Cursor problem

We have a laptop that's only 2 weeks old and this is the problem:-
When you are in Outlook Express and select an email, after a couple of seconds it selects the top message again without us doing anything.
We played around to try and find out what was wrong and discovered when you are typing anything the cursor keeps jumping to the home position.
This problem even happens on the desktop - if we try to double click an icon to open it won't open and the icon at the top left hand corner of the desktop is highlighted.
Also the touchpad doesn't seem to be very responsive - all these problems may be coincidental or they are caused by the same thing. Can anyone help with this problem please :tazz:
PS We ran Norton AntiVirus and AVG to see if there was a virus and neither picked one up.
