A Samsung DVD-ROM SD-612 reader only reads CDs and not DVDs. I am desperate as I have already tried the following:

[1] Putting another DVD reader in and getting same results.

[2] Uninstalling the software [[Microsoft 5.1.2535.0]] and reinstalling it and also looking for better drivers - there were none.

[3] Changing the EDI cable and checking jumper options - no problem found.

[4] Did a restore, but did not correct.

Now there is a DVD burner on the other connector on the cable and it works just fine with regard to reading and burning DVDs. So I am at a loss as to what the problem is.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the dvd drive in another system?
Try it without any other dvd drive connected..
If both produce the same result then most likely the drive has lost the dvd read side.
Also try the following two options and let us know if this fixes the issue.

Click Start then Run and type regedit...click "Ok"

In the left pane, expand (click +) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SYSTEM, then CurrentControlSet, then Control, then Class, and click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Right click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and choose Export. Name this file "filters" and save it to your desktop. This file can be deleted when it is determined it is no longer needed.

In the right pane, if either UpperFilters or LowerFilters are present, right click on it and choose Delete...accept the deletion. Delete both if they are both present.

Close Registry Editor and reboot.

----------------------------

If after doing that your drive still doesn't show up, please download CDGone from HERE. Once it's downloaded, extract the files to your desktop and open the READ ME FIRST.TXT file and follow the instructions there.

Post back with how things are going after doing the above.

Hi Rshaffer61

I tried both of your suggestions:

[1] Neither ‘UpperFilter’ or ‘LowerFilter’ were present on {4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

[2] Ran CDGone per instruction in ‘Read Me First.TXT’ but did not help.

Then I ran a registry repair program, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner V. 2.0, and noted two files with problems associated with {4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} as follows, out of 25 problems found:

Missing MRU and History Lists file ##### HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\*\b ##### F:\RegistryBackUp\{4d36e965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.reg

Missing MRU and History Lists file ##### HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\reg\b ##### F:\RegistryBackUp\{4d36e965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.reg

I ran repair program of Eusing Free Registry Cleaner V. 2.0.

Then I re-ran Eusing Free Registry Cleaner V. 2.0, and the same two error messages came up.

Then I ran Ccleaner.com V 2.07.575, but it found no problem.

Note: DVD-CR reader was a known good one just pulled from another machine that it was working just fine in. Also, I tried another known good DVD-CR reader with the same results.

Operating system is XP professional.

Any new ideas??
