I am helping out a friend and have run into an issue. The computer would not boot and showed the unmountable_boot_partition.

I ran the windows repair console and inserted the following commands and nothing helped. Instead the scan now fails immediately and shows there are one or more bad sectors on the hard drive.

chkdsk /r /p
chkdsk /r
chkdsk /p

fixboot
fixmbr

I have tried ACTIVE Partition Recovery and other various softwares found on the Hiren's BootCD.

All I want to be able to do is get the files off, afterwards I am replacing the drive. The bare minimum that I need off are one and a half years of jpg photos that have not been backed up.

Thanks for your Time
Hope you can help me.

Thanks Again!

Do NOT play with that drive anymore.
Slave it in another computer, or use hard drive enclosure to retrieve data (if possible).

I have looked at the drive and the partition in now completely gone. What should I do? I can not slave it as I do not have another computer that has the same hdd connector.

One word explanation hardly explains anything...

I do not have any other computers that can connect a SATA HDD. SO the option of slaving it will not work. Is there a simple way to just recover the files i.e. jpg files?

Your choices are:
~$10 for IDE to SATA converter
~$20 for USB hard drive enclosure

How likely is it that I can get the stuff off since I can not see the partition on it? I am most likely going to do the IDE to SATA.

What will I do once I have it?

My guess is as good as yours. You won't know until you try.

Okay, well I have slaved the drive and it will not mount and is not seen by the BIOS I have moved the Jumper and have followed the tutorial. Did the drive die?
