Metallica,

I tried to fix my brother-in-law's PC yesterday using your instructions. As soon as I booted up, I got the message that Norton had detected the Bloodhound.W32.EP virus (I am not sure if his Norton is current. It says Norton 2003) and was unable to repair. I belive the file name infected was C:\WINDOWS\System32\wininet.dll. I had previously downloaded CWShredder and AVG7.0 to a CD and I copied both .exe's to his desktop. When I tried to run CWShredder I got "CWShredder.exe - Application Error Apllication failed to initialize properly (Oxc0000005)". I ran AVG and did a scan and it found viruses but none were Bloodhound.W32.EP and some were not able to be cleaned. I then ran HijackThis and fixed everything you told me, rebooted in safe mode and deleted the folders you told me, booted back in Normal mode and changed the name of the hosts. I then ran Microsoft AntiSpyware and deleted some Trojans. However, the Bloodhound.W32.EP was still being detected. Also, about the same time that Bloodhound showed up, my brother-in-law stopped being able to connect to his ISP. He has to first connect to his ISP then he can connect to IE. When I go to properties for his ISP shortcut it says his target is Network Connections. When I go to control panel network connections, there is nothing there. When I go to Internet options>connections Dial up settings there is nothing there and it is dimmed out and I am unable to ADD. I also ran msconfig and checked the system config utility and clicked the services tab and it showed Network connections as stopped. I don't know what to do next. I am unable to check IE to see if what I did fixed LetGoHome. I am very frustrated. I know you can help me Metallica.

Can you please follow the instructions and panic later. :tazz:

I never had the illsuion that we would be able to get all that resolved in one go.

So if you post a new log we can take it from there.

No problem. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = websearch.drsnsrch.com/q.cgi?q=
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = websearch.drsnsrch.com/q.cgi?q=

O3 - Toolbar: SearchToolbar - {08BEC6AA-49FC-4379-3587-4B21E286C19E} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ie2cltr.dll

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

O16 - DPF: {7202BB0E-B8A2-245E-A14D-37E573032361} - http://69.50.182.94/1/gdnUS1862.exe

Reboot into safe mode and click
Start > Run > type sfc /scannow > OK
Windows will check the important system files for their presence and correct version. If one needs to be replaced it will prompt you for the Windows CD.

Open IE and click Tools > Internet Options > General Tab > Delete Files > put a checkmark in the Including Offline content box

Boot back to normal when you are done and post a new HijackThis log.

When I bootup, I still get the message that Norton has detected the Bloodhound.W32.EP virus and was unable to repair. It also says you may have to uninstall and reinstall. The file name infected was C:\WINDOWS\System32\wininet.dll. I can not find this file when I do a search. I am pretty sure his Norton is not current and he says he has never paid for any upgrade since he bought it in 2003. As you can see I did load AVG but after running it twice it detectected viruses, none were Bloodhound.W32.EP, and some were not able to be cleaned. I am still getting application errors "Application failed to initialize properly (Oxc0000005)" with different apps. He is still unable to connect to his ISP. He has to first connect to his ISP then he can connect to IE. When I go to properties for his ISP shortcut it says his target is Network Connections. When I go to control panel network connections, there is nothing there. When I go to Internet options>connections Dial up settings there is nothing there and it is dimmed out and I am unable to manually add a new dial-up. It only gives me the option for Broadband connection which he does not have. I also ran msconfig and checked the system config utility and clicked the services tab and it showed Network connections as stopped. I talked to his ISP support tech and he said the Bloodhound may be using to much resources for his modem? I am unable to get connected to the Internet but it is going to myyahoo it just cant display the page. Thanks for all your help.

What do you mean by "connect to IE"?

Install SP 2 for XP and IE that should replace a lot of system files with newer versions.

Let me know how it goes then.

I noticed this was in my HJT log twice. Is it supposed to be?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

Never mind!

Metallica,

I was unable to install SP 2 for XP. I got the message, "Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf Make sure Cryptographic Services is running on this computer". Cryptographic Services was not running so I tried to start it manually. I could not. I got the message, "Could not start Cryptographic Services service on local computer. Error 998 Invalid access to memory location".

I ran the bat file and then rebooted. I installed XP SP2 and got a setup error "The system cannot find the path specified". "Installation did not complete". I checked and Cryptographic Services still had not been started.
