Two things two check for you.

Look for the presence of this files in the system32 folder:
msvcrt.dll

Download and install Process Explorer from:
http://www.sysintern...ssExplorer.html
Run the program and use the Find DLL function for:
cryptext.dll

That way we will know if the dll is already loaded.

Metallica,

I found msvcrt.dll in the system32 folder. However, Process Explorer did not find cryptext.dll.

I just read back, but we never checked if it was present at all. Did you?

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. If you are asking if I checked for the presence of cryptext.dll before I ran the Process Explorer, I'm not sure. I have tried so many things that I just can't remember if I did that. What if it is not there? What if licdll.dll and regwizc.dll are not there either?

If they are not where they are supposed to be we will get them somewhere and put them there.

Can you do a Find Files for those three and let me know if and where you found them.

Metallica,

In a previous post I said "I did not delete the 2 folders in Catroot". I did some more looking at these 2 folders and compared them to my PC at work and discovered that the folder "{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}" on my work PC contains 122 items, mostly .CAT files. My brother-in-law's PC has a similiar folder but it is empty and does not contain any .CAT files. I think this is a problem isn't it?

I found this

The Catroot folder contains security catalog files.

The Catroot2 folder contains catalog database files.

You might be able to delete both the CatRoot and Catroot2 folders and their contents It really depends on your system.

You may have some third-party programs installed that may require certain .CAT files to be present. The .CAT files are located here:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}

Some people can delete them and experience no problems. Others can't.

here: http://www.neowin.ne...hp/t316422.html

The "security" is what worries me there.

Metallica,

I did a search for cryptext.dll, licdll.dll, and regwizc.dll. No results were found anywhere on the hard drive.

Actually, that comes as a relief. Now we have a concrete goal to aim for.

First off. Do you have a Windows XP CD?

If so, we can try if MicroSoft considered these files important enough to put them in the SFC.

Click Start > Run > type sfc /scannow note the space behind sfc > OK

Windows wioll look for important system files to check if they are present and of the correct version. When it notices one missing it will prompt you for the CD.

Metallica,

I don't think we have or can find his XP Home CD. It is possible that we could maybe order one if we can confirm his purchase to Microsoft. I ran sfc /scannow once before and it did not prompt me for the CD. I will run it again to be sure.

Can you PM me your email address?

I'll send you copies of my files with the instructions where to put them.

Or oder SP2 on CD: http://www.microsoft...us/default.mspx
The CD will contain copies of the latest versions of those files as well.

Metallica,

Thanks for all your help and the time and effort you put into helping me with this issue. Because time was a factor, I did a full system restore back to factory settings last Sunday. All seemed to go well. I loaded XP SP2 and everything seems to be working as it should. Please consider this thread closed. Thanks again so very much for your time, knowledge, and patience.
