I have a Compaq with a AMD Duron Processor.....751 MHz 320 RAM
XP Professional Service Pack 3

It has a CD player in it. I think it a Quantum. It works but only opens when CD is placed in unit. It does not show on MY Computer as being a drive letter. It shows up in the device manager under disk drives.

The DVD player lights up when the computer is first started, but is not recognized in the device manager...or will not play when a DVD is placed in the unit.

I unplugged the DVD player and restarted the computer...then turned it off and plugged the DVD player back in. It still did not pick up on a new installation of hardware.

I turned the computer off and hit the delete button to open te BIOS, but it did not give me an option of adding any hardware or turning any on.

Does anyone know what I need to do to correct this?

Thankds

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

1) did not work, because the device does not show in the device manager.

2) did not work because I could not locate the upper or lower filters to delete. They were not present in the registry.

3). I ran the cdgone.reg and installed it in the registry. restarted and still did not work. Altough when I right clicked, it did not provide an option for merge.

4) I did not do since the other two items did not work, I didn't want to lose the CD workability. Although the CD icon still does not show either, it still operates and is recognized when a cd is installed

Any other ideas?

Altough when I right clicked, it did not provide an option for merge

Did you unzip the file, first?

BTW, are we talking about two separate drives here?

As I stated in my original message, it is missing BOTH a CD icon and the DVD icon.

Yes, I unzipped the file first

It had.....
cdgone.reg
edit.reg
read me first

Neither one gave me the option of "merge"
It had
Open
cut
paste
properties

It makes me believe, that you're right clicking on unzipped file. This is what happens, when I right click on unzipped cdgone.reg file
After downloading cdgone.zip did you double click on it to unzip it?

Okay, I checked again after the file was unzipped. I guess I didn't have it unzipped before....even though it showed all the files in the zip.

Merging the file did the same thing as when I double-clicked on the cdgone file. It gave me the same acknowledgment, but did not add any drive icons to the My Computer screen.

Still do not have the icons for the DVD or the CD player.

Now the CD player will work and recongnizes a cd when placed in it, but you cannot run from the drive icon.

The DVD is not operational and will not recognize a DVD or CD when installed.
