Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a couple of issues with my computer right now.

1. I keep getting pop-ups from either Aurora, or Ceres. ( they both have the same icon in the upper left hand side of the pop-up window)

2. Everytime I go onto the internet I get redirected to an advertisement either with the web address of http://69.42.87 or http:69.42.87.221 saying that I won a toshiba laptop.

3. McAfee virus scan keeps blocking a virus a couple of times an hour that trys to infect my computer. It's called generic Backdoor.I

I ran my virus scan first and it found over 20 problems. All potentially unwanted programs. I got rid of them and then restarted my computer followed by spyBot, and then Ad-Aware SE. As soon as I restarted my computer my virus scan blocked the same generic Backdoor.I, so I ran virus scan again and had about 6 potentially unwanted programs!! And I still get the Aurora, Ceres and 69.42.87, and 69.42.221 problems.

I am still having problems.

I don't know if Aurora and Ceres is gone for sure, but using similar steps to remove a spyware called midADdle and I haven't had any pop ups for 3 days.

However, having completed all of the steps that your reply linked me to, I still have the problem where when I try to go onto the internet or click on a link I get redirected to http://69.42.87.221. The last number sometimes changes or instead of getting redirected I get a pop-up with the same http://69.42.87.221.

I used: CleanUP!, then Ad-aware SE and removed the 4 critical objects, restarted my computer, then ran CWShredder which didn't find anything wrong, then Spybot which found 11 problems (all tracking cookies), then I ran a virus scan online from TrendMicro (it found Troj Dloader.F), restarted my computer again followed by my McAfee virus scan.

Yet after all of this, I still have this http://69.42.87.221 problem. And now all of a sudden my homepage keeps on going to http:// I can't get it to stay at the homepage I want or any homepage.

Hello terrahari and welcome to Geeks to Go.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the Internet, or my instructions!

You still have some infections on your PC which I think are best dealt with a mixture of programmes for a fix. Please let me know if this is a multiple identity PC since it will have some impact to the fix. Now if you are ready, let’s get fixing!

You are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite

Please open Spybot S & D, and turn off Resident Teatimer. Do this by clicking Mode at the top of the screen, choose Advanced Mode then Tools and then Resident and unchecking Teatimer. It will hinder our attempts to clear out some files that need to be removed.

Install Ewido Security Suite (it is a 14-day trial version of the programme).

• Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The programme will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The programme will now go to the main screen

You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the programme scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this folder (if present) using Windows Explorer:

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

As I was preparing to print your directions out, I was first hit with an Aurora pop-up! And then that pesky generic Backdoor virus was blocked again by my virus scan and when I clicked to continue, I got a quick message and saw the file Nail [ 1].exe.


I printed out your directions and went through them step by step.

I did have HijackThis on my desktop and moved it to my program files.

My computer does have multiple accounts. There are 4 and everyone has Administrator rights.

After making sure I unchecked Teatimer from Spybot, I ran the Ewido Security Suite Scan, and saved the report.

I ran HijackThis and checked all of the items you told me to except one was no longer there: ( I don't know if this is important or not)

When I clicked Fix Checked, I got this error message:

Hello again Terrahari

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the Internet, or my instructions!

Most of the job is done, still one infection to deal with though. Please log on as all other identities and send with your next rely, HJT logs for all the other users, marking them accordingly. I will check those too to ensure the whole of the PC is clean and not just part of it.

To start please download the following programme, we will run it later. Please save it to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below services:

System Startup Service (or SvcProc)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

SvcProc

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Following reboot, please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labelled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure!):

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you receive a message and your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Hi Crustyoldbloke!

I followed your directions and was able to complete everything except getting rid of the : Co-Pilot--iWon, and iWon Prize Machine.

When I tried to remove the Co-Pilot--iWon, I got the following error message:

Error Loading C:\Program~1\iWon\iWonBar\3.bin\iWonbar.dll

The Specific Module Could not be found.


And when I tried to remove iWon Prize Machine, I got the following error message:

Advanced INF Install

Error: Could not locate InF file 'C:\ProgramFiles\iWon\iWonSlot\3.bin\uninstall.inf'

So those programs are still there. I didn't notice anything else that looked unfamiliar in the Add/Remove Programs section.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete these folders (if present) using Windows Explorer:

Please delete these files (if present) using Windows Explorer:

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the box next to the entry listed

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated.

Of the ones you have in this fixing session, I would be inclined to keep:

Thank you kind sir, but I am not a genius, just a fellow with some knowledge.

I am only able to do this sort of activity when I am well (I suffer from Menieres Disease) and am not able to work. This sort of passes time and I feel better for helping someone.
