If you suspect a infection:
I suggest you go to the Malware Removal and Spyware Removal Forum and run all the steps located in the START HERE. These self-help tools will help you clean up 70% of problems on your own. If you are still having problems after doing the steps, then please post the reguested logs in THAT forum. If you are unable to run any of the tools then start a new topic in the malware forum and put this in the subject line...I am unable to run any malware tools
If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).

I ran all of the malware software while in safemode (system onl boots in safe mode). I downloaded the software on my pc and saved it to a cd then used it on the laptop, all scans ran (turned up one problem software something called gamevance). Rebooted the system and it froze once it loaded but the desktop is still just a black page. was going to try rootrepeal next but the computer Now says it cannot read the disk I created (it's on the same cd I used for the other downloaded software)
The laptop is a dell D400 with a detachable cd rom drive.
any suggestions would definitely be helpful

Boot back into Safe Mode and run the software. Post all your logs in the Malware Forum when you start your topic there.
They will help you as we can not assist in Malware issues in this forum.
