Help>

Norton is giving me a virus message that identifies winid.dll in the system 32 folder as a virus, but it can't delete, or quarentine it, saying access denied. Going into the system 32 folder, I tried deleting it myself, and got an error message saying "Can not delete- access denied."

Hijack this, also identifies this file, but again it can't remove it.

By the way, here is my Hijack This log. Is there anything else bad in there?

Thanks!!

Hi greypaladin, welcome to GTG! <_<

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\System32\winid.dll

Reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winid.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log, and let us know how your system's working. :D

Hi Again,

1-Ran Hijack This, and selected the items you listed for fix. When I rescan Winid.dll is still there.

2- I tried to restart using safe mode. Hit F8, reboot continued, a bunch of dos commands listed, and then, the screen and keyboard went dead. What am I doing wrong? <_<

3-Looking in System 32, I do not see Power Reg Schedular files. I also no longer see the winid.dll file. Yes I am still viewing hidden files.

4-Norton is still popping up the error message for Backdoor Trojan and winid.dll. If I scan System 32 folder, it does not see it. If I scan file(Basically using Norton to open the Sytem 32 folder)it sees it, but it can not access.

5-Here is my new Hijack This log

This looks like a new one. :D Please hang with us as we fugure it out. <_<

Let's try this. Click Here to download TheKillbox. Extract TheKillBox.exe from the zip file and double click it to open it up. In the 'Enter Full Path and Filename to Delete' box, copy and paste these entries one by one, clicking 'Find and Kill This File' after each one:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\winid.dll

Click 'Exit' when done.

Note: If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, download and run: http://www.javacools...ngfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log.

Mosaic1 has created a bat file that should help us, download it from here.
http://computercops....ownload&id=1183

A few setup items first we need to do, make sure you can view all hidden files and folders, use this link for help.
http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

Next, review this article How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

Sign Off the Internet and Stay Off Until All Steps Are Finished

Extract the batch file (hiving.bat) and run it. If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning. Please allow this to run. The script is just producing a message box. Double click on the batch to run it. After a reboot the super hidden nasty file will no longer be loaded and will be visible.

Restart into Safe mode and find this file:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winid.dll

Right click on the file and choose properties.
Use the security tab on .dll and take ownership.
Change the 'everyone special' to
'you> with Admin rights-> FULL control
Then try to delete it, if that fails try to rename
it first to different name+ext.
Example:
ctl.dll>bleh.txt
bleh.txt > badfile.111

Once you have successfully deleted the file restart into Regular Windows mode.

Run CWShredder immediately. Press the 'Fix' button to clean.

Run Ad-Aware
Restart.
Run Spybot
Restart.

Report back if you're successful or not.

It is gone!! <_<
When I rebooted, Norton automatically quarantined the file.

CW Shredder came back clean. Spybot came back clean. Adaware found some pieces of Cool Web Search, and a few other items. all were removed.

Things seem to be running a little bit slow. I will come back if that turns out to be a problem.

Thanks for your excellent help!
