Hi new here and new to the technical side on computers, so please talk slowly if you think you can help :-)

My computer wont complete start up. It wont even let me start it in safe mode, it hangs on gagp30kx.sys After reading another thread on here I have put in the windows cd to try to get to repair. CD starts up but once I choose R for repair it says it hasn't found my HDD. Same thing happens if I choose windows setup.

I have info and pic's that are important to me on the HDD so any help would be much appreciated.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

Thanks for the help Broni.

I ran the diagnostic and it returns the message "Drive not ready. Error/status code:0104" It is a WD740GD HDD so I have sent off an email to WD to see if they can tell me what that means. It is an older computer. I built myself a new one a month ago and since I have been so busy lately I haven't had a chance to transfer my data across. I guess I was asking for trouble.
