Okay, I have followed all the steps laid out in the stickied post Malware and spyware removal sticky. I have posted the requested logs below.

Here is the background: I have a laptop that I use to connect to the internet when I'm working out of town. I have to login thru motel networks (many of which are wireless and some not even password protected) and I think that's where I may have picked up this strain. The laptop was working fine up until about a month ago, when I found all my programs were blocked from the internet. My internet connection showed as being connected and even showed send/receive traffic, though not a lot (a few kbs every few seconds, maybe 25-50kbs) but my explorer, my anti-virus software (Norton), windows automatic updates, malwarebytes, any program that normally connects to the internet cannot do so. As soon as I realized this, I disabled the connection. I tried a few things that all led to dead ends. My automatic updates showed as being turned on but my Security Center was listed as 'currently unavailable because the service has not started or was stopped'. So, I went into my services and noted that it was Disabled. I tried setting it to manual but as soon as I hit 'Apply' the Startup Type switches back to Disabled.

I had version 1.31 of MBAM so I ran a full scan but it turned up nothing. I ran GMER's rootkit detector next - it found sectors that 'appeared to be rootkit activity' but didn't provide any other details. I tried doing a system restore but there were no restore points available.

This all happened about a month and I wasn't able to sit down again with a 2nd computer to really tackle the problem, until today. Here are the steps I took today:

1. I ran TFC. It worked fine.
2. I ran the SysRestorePoint utility but I received two messages, the 1st one saying 'Restore Point Creation Failed', the 2nd one saying 'New Restore Point Successfully Created'. However, when I ran System Restore, there is still no restore point available.
3. I ran Erunt. It seemed to work correctly.
4. I ran version 1.40 of MBAM. It found 7 inections and cleaned up 6. The 7th, C:\WINDOWS\system32\uacinit.dll (Trojan.Agent), was still there after a reboot. Also, I couldn't find it at that location even with all system files not hidden. I also tried to search in regedit just for the heck of it but it turned up nothing there either. Here is the last log from MBAM, after the other 6 infections had been removed.

5. Because I am blocked from connecting to the internet, I could not update my antivirus or windows. I did, however, on my other computer go to the Windows Update site and download all the citical and security updates since May 09. I am in the process of running them now, starting with the Malicious Software Removal Tools.

6. Although I had to reboot as part of the MBAM infection removal, I rebooted again here. My programs are all still blocked from the internet and still some traffic occurring on the connection. I immediately disconnected again, of course.

7. I ran RootRepeal but, I got several errors, all saying 'Could not read the boot sector. Try adjusting the Disk access level in the Options menu'. I did this, setting the access level to High. This time I got one error like the above, followed by 'Could not read system registry! Please contact the author!'. Here is the log from RootRepeal

Update: The Malicious Software Remover Tool I downloaded from the Windows Update site seems to have removed the infection, however, I was still unable to connect to the internet until I ran a Winsockfix tool. I am now updating virus definitions as we speak, so hopefully all is well. Still, if anyone sees anything in the logs they think I may still need to address, please say so.

Update to the update: there are still some issues occurring (not able to enable Security Center, windows updater not working locally) and even some new ones (MBAM won't start now) but I'm hopeful b/c I can connect to the windows update site and Norton's updater is working and it has already detected and removed the metajuan trojan.
