i have a computer with 98 and 2000, the 98 doesnt work and the 2000 isnt fully functional. i got XP pro. (not the upgrade) and put it on. i tried before that to format my C drive to then put on XP but it wouldnt let me. I put on XP without formatting anything and wish to get off my other 2 operating systems without losing my personal files. I also want to try to stay clear from using a hub or router because of the time. is there anyway i can clean install the computer, and how?? i also tried to install XP again but i dont know what some of the items mean, and to my understanding, they do mean formatting, (this message does seem like i am not computer literate, but i am) please help

Hi silverslik1
Welcome to geekstogo
you say you have 98 and 2000 and installed Xp on your system so i'm guessing you have more then one partition on your have drive? how many do you have? where did you install XP over 98 or 2000 or on a other partion? any formatting you do you will lose your personal files if you save your files then you can format your hard drive any why you would like one or more partitions.

To format harddrive with one partition.
1) boot with floppy bootdisk GET HERE
(make sure to start with cdrom support)
2) at a: type fdisk (enter)
3) at a: type format c:(enter)
4) reboot system with cdrom support watching for cdrom drive letter
5) at a: type cd * (* is cdrom drive letter)
6) at *: type setup
Windows should start to install.

I put on XP without formatting anything and wish to get off my other 2 operating systems without losing my personal files.

If you format you will lose EVERYTHING on your hard drive.

You should be able to remove the other Windows installation, without formatting, by just deleting the WIN98, and WINNT directories. Then reboot your computer using the WindowsXP CD, and perform a Repair Installation. Click Here for detailed instructions on performing a Repair Installation of WindowsXP. <_<

is there anyway i can clean install the computer, and how??

Performing a clean install will remove everything from your hard drive. If you don't want to lose it, you'll first need to back it up to floppies, Zip disks, CD's, or another hard drive. Click Here for instructions on performing a clean install.
