Is HijackThis picking up a registery entry please check the register for the following registery keys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run "Services Host" = scchost.exe

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices "Services Host" = scchost.exe

No, Kc - I looked in both spots and also did a search within the registry for scchost.exe, but it was nowhere to be found.

Hi Hardluck Hank

Have a look in service for that item.

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:
Services Host" = scchost.exe
When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

It looks like I have to go to safe mode as the admin for the initial step --- no biggie there. However regarding the remaining instructions ....

1. I think you (and/or I) are missing the contents of the quote box. Please try again.

2. I'm confused by step 3. How do you "Save as Type to All Files" ?

3. Also I not sure how to "Save the file to the desktop". Do you mean like a shortcut? Do you just drag/drop the file to the desktop?

I need a heads up on the instructions.

One final question ...

Last night I picked up some malware that resided in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\......
which was detected by Activescan. Activescan only detects it but could't delete it.

I looked for this directory to examine if it was there but there were no subdirectories under C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\. I later ran Housecall which fortunately also found it and allowed me to delete it. My question is why is/was this one subsubdirectoy invisible? I had the proper view setting enabled, and I found several other cases of "Content.IE5" subdirectories in other locations under Documents and Settings. Strange that I couldn't find it (as well as any other subdirectories under Temporary Internet Files).

BTW, I have subsequently rerun Activeware and indeed the only thing left is that "Adware:Adware/SaveNow" reference in the registry. Sticky wicket, eh? The other malware was gone. FYI - I ran a search within the registry for the term "SaveNow" and there were no results.

As for savenow I think this is bug with the panda scan ha had a lot of members with left over registery key ?

G'day, Kc !!

Still have some nasty problems to address.

1) I believe Ewido has been the problem of my being not able to reload Norton Systemworks and Personal Firewall. I think there are some files that it believes to be invasive. I have tried just unenabling Ewido, but to no avail. Perhaps when I uninstall Ewido (my 14 days limit is drawing near), that will do the trick. Have you run into this error before?

2) I am having problems with running for about a half hour and then programs stop loading properly. Perhaps this should be addressed elsewhere. I double click on them from the desktop and nothing will startup. When I shutdown, the system states that they having ended improperly (which leads me to believe that at least they were loaded into memory) and asks me to end them so that the rest of the system will shut down. It seems to be getting worse. Gonna need some help on this one.

3) I really think I have a hand on most of the more malicious malware, but I am still having problems with

.... 1) Veritas.exe keeps reappearing. Ewido wipes it out, but I'm trying to get a handle on why it keeps returning.

.... 2) Sometimes on startup Ewido wants to clean msnpg.exe, which I allow and then it asks me to reboot. I have seen this occur more than once tho.

.... 3) Got a new one today (eraseme_70474.exe) after going thu a complete cleaning startup (ie. safemode ... clean prefetch, run cleanmgr, run ewido, then reboot to normal mode .. run housecall (nada), panda (a few items, mostly just cookies, and then a final hijack this (providing the app startup problem allows me to get this far - sometimes I have to reboot again and then run hijack in normal mode).

Anyhow .... here's my inital hijack (safemode), ewdio (safemode), panda (normal mode) and final hijack (normal mode) run from last night.

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Service Drivers] msnpg.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Service Drivers] msnpg.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Datalog Application] msdata.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Datalog Application] msdata.exe
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

I followed your instructions and hijack this appears to have removed the cited entries.

However.....

I am unable to locate the files mentioned to determinne if they still exist since they do not have normal path names. They are just referenced as:

[Service Drivers] msnpg.exe
[Microsoft Datalog Application] msdata.exe

I don't know quite where to look, however I did verify that they were not in either the directories Windows or Windows/system32.

Furthermore, I am unable to do a search for them. Somewhere in the last 3-4 days a necessary file for the search function seems to be missing. I looked up the problem at microsoft.

There instructions were ....

Start > Run > "%sysroot%/inf"
Locate srchasst.inf file
Right click on it, and then click Install.

I did this and the install routine asked me to insert the WIN XP HE disc. This I do not have since it was already installed on my computer when I got it. I have the reinstall system CDs (that I created on day 1) but they have compressed data on them instead of individual files.

It is looking for the file "msgr3en.dll".

Can you help me on this or perhaps is there another forum where I might hope to solve the problem?

I really can't search for files like "msnpg.exe" or "msdata.exe" without them.

When you have done the Panda scan please run this.

Download this zipped file FindRK-files.zip to your desktop.
Unzip the files to your desktop
Restart the PC into safe mode
It must be ran in safe mode for it to work correctly.
Open the folder and run the RKFILES.BAT, sit back and wait untill its finished.
Restart back to a normal windows session and post the text located here C:\Log.txt please and a new hijackthis log.

I have your data, but first ....

***** This problem about apps not starting is becoming critical !!!!!!!!!! ****

Three times I restarted and couldn't get IE to begin. Finally since I have MSN messenger and it was notifying me about email (I use hotmail), I clicked it and it opened a window. If it hadn't, I might not have been able to contact you back. It seems to be a desktop related problem. Even tho I can't open IE as a desktop Icon, once I have a window open (by whatever means), I can do a Google search
that seems to have no problem opening up a second window. Once the phenomenon starts, I can't open any app using a desktop icon, or apps whose icons appear in the start menu.

Another side effect is tho I execute Hijack, it does the scan but hangs when it tries to open up the notepad. I can't create a new Hijack log, but fortunately I can give you one that I ran just prior to rebooting to create the rkfiles.log. The resuls of that scan is what is listed below. One note, rundll32.exe appears in the list, whereas I know it didn't a day or two ago, and if I recall, is where some bugs hide.

Anyhow ....

The results of the rkfiles.log (fortunately I can open explorer with no prob).

I finally found that if I just run Hijack scan without saving, and then subsequently hit the "save log" button, it allows me to save the log. I notice that there is a ad/notice screen at the top of hijack that goes blank when it has previously hung up.

********* I am having more and more problems with the app start bug. I need help on this real bad. I must have rebooted 5-6 times before I could get an open IE window. If this isn't solved soon, I may be contacting you via my neighbor's computer.

Hi Hardluck Hank

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 217.162.64.188:80
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder.

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure all are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

1. In killbox, I made the mistake on not clicking the the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. I deleted the three files, and then I reran killbox, but this time did click the button, input the entries and then rebooted. I checked again as I am writing this and the files are not there.

2. Ran Panda Activescan which froze midstream. It has happened before. I powered down the PC, repowered up and reran Activescan but removed the internet connection once the program had started. The report is below.

3. Ran a final Hijack but only asked for the system scan since sometimes it hangs up when the report is being generated. From past experience, I know you can generate a report later anyhow which I did and is listed below. Hijack, however hung up after the report had been generated.

4. I am still having problems with apps not being able to startup. I have also noticed that sometimes it takes an inordinate amount of time when the "Windows is Starting" screen appears. In some cases, just the desktop appears without any icons and the system freezes. Please give me a little advice about what to do or where to turn to solve this.

PS. When I was rebooting to get back into normal mode, Ewido detected and cleaned "Veritas.exe" even before the desktop was displayed.

Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox.
