Hey guys

I've had this problem for a while, I’ve tried to ignore as long as possible because of other stuff I had to take care but time came to try to get rid of this annoying problem. I tried to fix in for the past 2 days but any Antivirus program (Norton, Housecall (online)) or spyware (Adware, S&D and pretty much all others out there) i tried to run it locks up before the program has a chance to finish. (in safe mode also).Spybot once found something in a scan but it locked up soon afterwards. The computer also freezes while running other programs after 5-10 mins. (games, apps etc). I had Iarsn TaskInfo running in the background once and it just showed my comp resourced got to 100%. It did not look like any new programs had opened up…

I had got a virus around the same time as this problem came up I got rid of it but this stayed. Could this be the after affects of the virus for not deleting it properly or not deleting all of it?

(The virus gave me an error when I tried to open my computer or any folder on my comp. I did a scan of the system32 folder only and deleted the infected files).
That’s all the info I had, here's the log file.
Any help is appreciated.

once more thing, i tried running sfc /scannow but it also locked up.

Sounds like you've really worked hard. YOu did well cleaning up the preliminary stuff.

You have several infections. Let's start on this one:

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please download and install these programs - don't run them yet!!

Please download and unzip
About:Buster to a folder. Inside the folder is a readme file that has instructions on the use of the program.
AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.
Start AboutBuster, click the update button, check for update, drag the box to the side and hit download updates, close the box . Don't run it yet.

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Download and unzip cwsserviceremove to your desktop. use either link below:
http://computercops....F...oad&id=3002[/url
http://www.mytechsup...rviceremove.zip

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://cwshredder.ne...CWSshtreder.exe

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

For anyone using Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here http://www.davehigha...ds/xphidden.zip to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the fix:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

atlwu.exe

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into SafeMode. <---MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!

3. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://E:\WINDOWS\system32\xxuai.dll/sp.html#28129
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5235E8D2-6497-F9FD-5D9D-783ADF9A9B4D} - (no file)
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = E:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - E:\WINDOWS\system32\atlwu.exe (file missing)

4. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

5. Scan with AdAware and let it remove any bad files found.

6. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

7. Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

8. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

9. Reboot into normal mode.

10. Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.c...bee/hoster.zip. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

11. Download and run this online virus scan:
[url="http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp"]http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

then reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log to see how we did. :tazz:

Hey coachwife6

Everything went well untill the adware section. It froze about 3 mins into the scan.
I went through the instructions u posted 3 times just incase I made a mistake. Exact same thing happened each time.

I noticed that after running hackthis, this file did not get deleted.

O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä #•ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - E:\WINDOWS\system32\atlwu.exe (file missing)

I ran hackthis again after the first time and this file still remained. All others were removed. But after the computer froze and I rebooted all other files returned except 1 (O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = E:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE)
That was the only file that was removed permanently.

Heres the log from teh about buster scan

Please set your system to show
all hidden files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all programs and all windows, leaving only HijackThis running. Please disconnect from the internet. Place a check narj against each of the following, making sure you get each one and not any others by mistake:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {FF983118-58C7-4AD4-B5A7-691C39CB7B42} - E:\PROGRA~1\SMARTW~1\SWMSIE~1.EXE
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - E:\WINDOWS\system32\atlwu.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

E:\WINDOWS\system32\atlwu.exe (file missing)
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Let the system reboot.

Please reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look to see how we did. Let me know how it's running. :tazz:

Let's try it again. Many of these programs, you have already downloaded:

Step 1

Download cwsserviceremove.zip and extract it to your desktop:
http://lineofire.gee...rviceremove.zip

Step 2
Download this tool called AboutBuster http://www.downloads...AboutBuster.zip
Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet.

Step 3
Download Adaware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft....h/default.shtml. Install and open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen. Exit Adaware.

Step 4

Print out these instructions so you have them handy as most of the steps need to be done in safe mode and you may not be able to go online.

Step 5
Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files.

Step 6
Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper. When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Step 7
Reboot to Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. To get back to normal mode just restart the computer as you normally would.

Step 8
Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - E:\WINDOWS\system32\atlwu.exe (file missing)

and delete the following files if present(do not be concerned if some do not exist).

E:\WINDOWS\system32\atlwu.exe

Step 9
Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report(copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

Step 10
Scan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found.

Step 11
Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Step 12

Find the cwsserviceremove.reg that you downloaded in Step one. Double click on the cwsserviceemove.reg Answer ‘Yes’ when asked to have its contents added to the Registry.

Step 13
Reboot to normal mode, scan again with Hijack This and post a new log here.

Step 14
Finally, do an online scan at one of the following sites. Let it remove any infected files found.
http://housecall.antivirus.com
or
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm

Post a fresh HijackThis log and the AboutBuster report back here please. :tazz:

Hey coachwife6

Before I start jsut a quick question.

There are 3 Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator

Do I need to disable all 3 of them?

*Edit
I check Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and the start, stop etc.. buttons are greyed out and so is the start up type (on automatic)... i'm not sure if I should try to disable it in another way or just leave it.

I know what I'm proposing to do isn't the scientific, tried and true approach, but the only time my adaware froze, I wrote down what file it was stuck on. I closed down adaware and then went directly to that file and clicked on it. Closed it down and then ran adaware again.
