gaming and intermittent connection problem

I have a problem. When playing BF2142 I get a constant "problem with connection" flash and my ping jumps from ~40 to over 500 then back down and up again and this happens every 10-30 seconds. Makes it really hard to play let me just say. I first tried uninstalling the game and reinstall, then I changed my modem (three of them), then i reformatted the HD and full reinstall of everything and still have the same problem. When it does this the video and the sound from the game pauses as well. ATT says everything tests fine. Is something wrong with my computer? video card, sound card, ethernet card, etc???
