I am a video editor looking to try and build or buy a desktop replacement laptop for mobile video editing. Cost is fairly liquid up to $4,500-$5,000. So far, I've narrowed my choice down to a D900F though I am worried a bit about the heat, battery life and overall durability (due to reports of under-built case and excessive heat).
My second choice would be a laptop with built-in dual graphics cards. But I don't know if that is worth the loss in processing power (for rendering and such). The Alienware M17X is an example, but I'm sure there are better models and prices out there.
My final option is to build a laptop from component parts. I have built a desktop before and feel confident in my ability to follow instructions in the building of a portable unit.
So the question is: if you had about $5,000 for a mobile video work-station, what would you buy or build?
Some things to remember:
- This is not for gaming, but video production so keep that in mind.
- Processing power over graphics cards?
- Durability is key. I don't want a $5,000 paperweight in a few months.
- Ports for many types of media input are a plus
Thanks to anyone who can help!
