"My Computer" wont launch with Windows Explorer open

A friend recently installed Windows Live Messenger and since has been having multiple problems. He was having a User Id error when booting and has since corrected it. He can launch "My Computer" alone, but when he has Windows Explorer open, Control Panel open, it will not launch. He has since removed all applications for the Windows Live and is still having this problem.

He is running Windows XP, SP3

Any ideas on what is happening? Is this a conflict of sorts?
