Problem downloading attachments or programs such as skype or itunes

I have been having trouble downloading off the internet. It doesn't seem to be any particular type of download, i have noticed it with email attachments, skype, itunes, etc. When i click to download something, the box comes up as normal saying OPEN, SAVE and CANCEL. when i click on open, it looks as thuough the file or program is downloading. However, when it has finished, nothing happens. If it is an email, the attachment doesn't show up, and if it is a program, there's no set up wizard or anything. When i click on save, again, it looks as though the download is working. However, when the save is complete and i go and look where i saved it, there is nothing there, the file is nowhere to be found on my computer!
i really want to try and fix the problem as i have attachments i need to read and programs i need to download! please help! thank you..
