I just pulled my husbands old computer out of the closet and I am trying to get all the bugs worked out. (We are stuck with it while our new one is being repaired.) I pulled up add/remove programs and found out I had the ABI network on there.. after searching on Google I found out it is a hard one to get rid of. I would really appreciate some help. Right now I can't open my computer, my documents, pretty much anything that I need to get into. I have seen that most people used Hijack this. I installed it and here is the logfile:

Hello southtownbaby,

Welcome to Geekstogo.

Firstly, please disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.

Step two

Next, we need to ensure hidden files and folders can be viewed;

* Right click to open My Computer on your Desktop.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Now

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

  • Click on "File Handling".
  • Click on "Restore MS Hosts File".
  • Click OK on the Confirmation box.
  • Click on "Make Read Only?"
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.
Finally in this post
  • Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here.
  • It is important that it is saved to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Note Your machine is an old one on which many of our tools won't work. If you find you can't run RSIT just run HijackThis again and post the log back.

So when you return please post
  • the two RSIT logs - log.txt and info.txt

Note: Unless otherwise instructed always post the logs in the forum. If reports don't fit on one post. It might be necessary to break the logs up to get them on the forum. Just use as many posts as you need, that's fine. :)

Well, I managed to do a few of the things you listed. I can actually open files now, so it is an improvement.

Under add/remove programs there were some things I didn't recognize. It listed: DMVlite, Home search assistant, search extender, shopping wizard, the best offers, and the ABI network. None of which it would allow me to remove.

It will not let me into c:\windows\system, it says access is restricted.

The HostsXpert 4.2 program tells me it cannot create c:\windows\hosts file.

This computer has been sitting for a while, and it is pretty outdated... if you think it's hopeless just let me know. LOL. I am just happy that there has been any improvement. I really appreciate the help. Here is the new log from Hijack this:

This computer has been sitting for a while, and it is pretty outdated... if you think it's hopeless just let me know.

No I don't think it is hopeless just a little harder.

I have my daughters old ME machine and we still use it for various bits and pieces... it may take a bit of work but it might be useful to you to have it running properly. :)

Now

I see you have or had Avast anti-virus on you machine. I wonder though if it is current.

If it is current please update it and run a full scan. Allow it to fix everything it finds. If you can locate a report of what it has done post the results back here.

If it isn't please uninstall it and reinstall a new version:

Go here Download and follow the prompts to install. You will need to register to keep it running longer than 60 days.

After that, if it hasn't already done so, download all updates for your antivirus and then run a full scan of your computer. When prompted to delete, move them to the vault. Let the program fix all problems it finds. Post results of the scan back here. If you have difficulties finding a log, go to the vault and look there. You may have to highlight copy and paste to get the results back here.
