Hi Sams Flame and welcome to GeekstoGo.

I am UKBiker and will be helping you to clean up this log.
Before we start on the log, there are a couple of things that you need to do first, as you have actually got quite a nasty piece of malware on your system..
firstly, please print out these instructions as this will make it easier for you as the fix progresses, it can also be helpfull if you cross off the steps on the print as you complete them.

Ok, on with the fix

Step #1

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Step #2

Please download Nailfix from here:

http://users.pandora...chy/nailfix.zip

Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Step #3

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Step #4

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Step #5

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Post the log from the scan here for me.

Step #6

Go to "Add/Remove Programmes" in the Control panel and remove these entries if they are there

Elite Toolbar
Elite Sidebar

Step #7

Then please run HijackThis, click "Scan", and tick against the following items in the log:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click "Fix Checked".

Step #8

Now using Windows Explorer, please delete these files if they are there

c:\windows\system32\keiopnt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\datmlog.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ps1.exe
C:\windows\system32\elitehaf32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll

Step #9

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan you generated in step #5.
Dont worry if we do not get everything clean with the first pass, we will get it sorted.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies. This will mean that you will lose your stored passwords and will have to sign in again when you next visit a site that needs your password etc. I f you wish to keep your passwords, then do not delete the cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, also this one C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan you generated in step #5.
Dont worry if we do not get everything clean with the first pass, we will get it sorted.

CONGRATULATIONS, your log is clean. :tazz:

How do you keep it that way?

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Thank you so much. I wasn't sure it would be clean, but... I did notice that so far, I have not received any of those annoying Aurora Popups since doing what you said.

Anyways, Thank you very much and I will be recommending this site to others (starting with my sister) who called me tonight with complaints of the same thing.

You guys are the bomb!!!

One more thing while I'm here... Since this crap hit the fan, I've been unable to use system restore (either to create a restore point or to restore to an earlier point in time).

I have checked and that function is not disabled, but... it still won't let me. Once you told me my machine was clean, I tried to create a restore point, but it said no. LOL...

Any ideas about this?

Thanks,

Hi there Sams Flame

Some malware can prevent System Restore operating properly, so it is important in those cases to "purge" the system restore history before creating a new Restore point. Purging is in other words "getting rid of all restore points".

To do this, follow these steps

Disabling the System Restore Utility (Windows XP Users). This will purge the system restore utility.

1. Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click on Properties.
2. Click on the System Restore tab.
3. Put a check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.
4. Click the 'OK' button.
5. You will be prompted to restart the computer. Click Yes.

Now you have to re-enable the Restore Utility, follow steps one to five above but on step three remove the check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.

To create a new System Restore Point in Windows XP Home Edition, click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. When the System Restore Utility opens, click "Create a Restore Point" then click Next. Enter a name for this Restore Point (for instance, "Before Installing Office XP"), and click Create. The utility will then take a snapshot of your system so that you can restore to that point sometime in the future.

This should solve the problem, if not, please post again here with details of any error messages or codes you seeand we will look into it for you.

Thanks... I tried what you suggested, but I keep getting the following message.

"System Restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart your machine and try again."

So I rebooted and tried again. No dice... It won't let me turn it off. Any ideas?

OK Flame, lets try a different way of stopping system restore. May work and if not, you are no worse off. You'll need an admin account to do this and I'd boot to safe mode to try it.
- right click on My Computer
- click on Manage
- go to services and open it
- locate System Restore Service and right click it
- set the startup to Disable
- reboot. SR should not start if it allowed you to set it to disable.

Once you have rebooted then you can set a new retore point as described earlier.

Please post back with how you get on.

Nope, that didn't work either. :tazz: This is what it said when I clicked on Manage.

Microsoft Management Console:

MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\compmgmt.msc.

This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file.

I know for a fact that I have total administrative rights, so it can't be that.

Perhaps something got deleted? I'm waiting for restore cd's to be mailed to me and I will try reinstalling XP and all that when I get them.

Well, that sounded like it might work, but it said that the load module could not be found. I am thinking that somehow that got deleted that shouldn't have been, so I guess I'll just wait until the disk with XP arrives so I can reload.

Thanks for all your efforts, though.
