Hi
I have an old pc which is a Windows XP OS. I would like to upgrade the processor. The motherboard is a Gigabyte Socket A motherboard GA-7VRX. In the Belarc Advisor details it says that the processor is a 1.16 GHZ AMD Athlon XP. What sort of processor do I need and roughly a price?
Many thanks for all replies!

With respect I very much doubt it's a 1.16Ghz processor as that's an odd figure for an Athlon XP, for whom's clock speeds start at 1.47Ghz. It's more likely your current processor is underclocked, or you don't actually have an Athlon XP, it's just been reported as that.

Availability of Socket A processors brand new is virtually non-existant. eBay is your best bet if you really want a replacement processor. The board is listed as supporting up to the Athlon XP 2600, because of it's age it won't see anything newer.

Upgrade the motherboard along with the CPU.
Socket A processors are obsolete and are not sold anymore (except maybe on eBay)

No thanks edge2022. I have been given some options. Just looking at cheaper alternatives. It's my mothers pc which she mainly uses for internet and word processing. I have passed the options and prices on to her so it depends on what she wants to do now. Thanks again!
