I have a very slow dial-up computer and can't get DSL and don't use it enough to warrant satellite. My question is can I copy programs such as anti virus, Defender or XP SP3 to CD for some future installation? I tried to copy a small program, erased it and tried to reinstall it from the CD and could not.

Programs are not transferable from one PC to another. You can't copy a bunch of files and expect the program to work unfortunately. If you could, Microsoft would have gone bump years ago.
