Headphones but no speakers

I have a Dell Dimension running on Windows XP Service Pack 3

A few weeks ago the sound stopped working from speakers but it still works from the headphone jack.

I pluggges the speakers in to another pc and they do work - so it is somewhere between the card and the jack

any thoughts?
