On my old XP pc I can minimize(?) the screen display and thereby display part of my desktop by clicking the middle of the three boxes in the upper right of the screen. But when I try that with my new XP that process does not work. Instead the whole screen disappears and I am returned to the desktop. Why is that?

I want to drag the screen's icon to the desktop to create a shortcut on the desktop. But I can't simulatneously see the target screen and the desktop. Help please.Thanks.
