How can the startup items be physically removed from the MSCONFIG startup table.
I have alot of items that appear in the startup dispaly, that do not have check
marks and some like PTSNOOP, AOL fast start that although they are unckecked and the
apply button is pushed, the register is compacked (PC tools Register Mech) the next
time the system is booted back up they (the above mentioned) are back checked !
I can't find PTSNOOP, I deleted that program a long time ago, and it does not show
(the program file) anywhere on my system. How can the entries be removed from the startup list that are unchecked and the ones that continually reappear after being
unchecked...
Thanks all

When you reboot the computer you should get a screen/ popup asking about starting in selective mode. You should allow the selective mode. This should keep those programs from being re-checked.

If you are absolutely positive that the programs you have unchecked do not exist anymore, then there is a way to remove the entries.

Please note that msconfig is used to control what programs you want to auto start. Usually they will still exist on the computer and if you want them to auto start again you will need to recheck them in msconfig. If you Remove the entries, then you will have no control.
Also, as you have noticed, msconfig "holds" on to some entries even though the programs are gone.

use the program called MSConfig cleanup from my signature.

Next: Do not use any registry cleaning tools what so ever. They will destroy the registry and render your computer useless. There is no major improvement in running a cleaner.

I am wondering if MSConfig cleanup can help me with my problem, which is sort of the opposite of this one. I tried to remove startup entries using msconfig, and got into a mess.
See http://www.geekstogo...ig-t256373.html (posted 23 oct09)
It looks as if I recovered, but only partially. Items are checked in the msconfig services tab, but several critical services are not running. Is there a tool to help recover those lost functions?
- Thanks for any advice.

The issues that you are seeing are from the aborted Service Pack install. That needs to be sorted out. It is not msconfig related. MSconfig only stops programs from loading at startup.

You mentioned you were going to install a new hard drive because the other was "noisy"?
Download from my signature "hard drive diagnostic tools" for your drive. Burn it as an iso file and boot into the diagnostics. It will run the drive manufacturers diagnostics. You can use "burncdcc" from my signature. Run the extended test It is better.

Also, if you planned on cloning the old disk to the new, I would not recommend it till the OS is running proper. All you will do is move the troublesome OS to the new drive. Based on what you have, I would new it as a new install.

MsConfigbitme2 I see you already have a topic opened on this issue..
Please do not bump on this topic as it can cause confusion for the assisting tech and may cause the wrong advice to be given. This can result in your system being rendered unusable.

MSconfigBitMe2...
please start your own thread..lowdown is here

westcparts...get BillP winpatrol here its free and its a easy way to disable things from loading at startup or if you prefer just have them start delayed after windows is loaded ...you set the delay in minute/seconds...
as a bonus it also lets you know if ANYTHING tries to add itself to your startup...this includes any malware so its another layer of protection..you can allow or deny as you see fit...not sure of something...google it first...
